Terrible. I want to believe it was "just" technical difficulties but right now?

If they indeed shot it down, time to up the scales, no military aircraft makes it off the ground in the entirety of Iran, time to educate them on the concept of meanest mofo in the valley and the benefit of having the big stick and willingness to use it

I think it did get hit with something because according to the Dailymail Iran will not give up the black boxes to help determine what happened to it. Which isn't really surprising to me because the Russian backed rebels did the same thing in Ukraine in 2014.

  Almost half the passengers were Iranian and over a 3rd were Canadian. No Americans on board as far as I can tell. Hard to see why Iran would be behind shooting the aircraft down.

They have no qualms about killing their own people, so that's not really a problem for them. I kept a close read on info last night while everything was going on. After the first round, the USAF scrambled fighters into Iranian territory, and the IAF did in kind. There was a great deal of confusion last night and it was very tense. Around the time this aircraft went down the FAA put out a notice baring any aircraft because of the risk of collateral damage via confusion (the very same reason we gave in blowing up an Iranian airliner back in the day which they never forgot about). Did the Iranians shoot it intentionally? I can't say.. but I've no doubt they shot it down.. and no one will find out the truth now. The Ukrainians are opening a criminal inquiry.

Maybe the Iranians did it accidentally.  Hence the Iranian government coming out promptly blaming it on a mechanical issue.  If it had been the US shooting it down, I think that would have been splashed all over the headlines today.

I think neither government would ever admit to such wrongdoing. I just don't see it happening... as it stands now the media is barely talking about the crash, which I would think would be a big item for today.

   That is a possibility. I'm not sure if it's the most probable, but certainly possible given the events. There's no logical reason I can see for it being intentional though. Makes no sense. Iran is capable of targeting US aircraft over the gulf if they chose to shoot down a civilian craft on purpose.

I don’t think either government would admit it, but if the Iranians had any potential to blame it on the US, they would have much like the accidental downing of the Iranian airliner by the USS Vincennes back in 1988.  Instead we got an immediate “mechanical issue” cause.

Absolutely, it very well could be completely coincidental.  I do also agree that it was most likely not intentional.

Newish plane, experienced crew, Iranians do not seem to want to let go of the black box....
