Aren’t awards shows in general an outdated concept?

Well, people in every industry like to give and get awards. I mean, who wants to see the 23rd Annual Actuarial Superstars awards unless those actuaries are good looking? It's really about moving product -- the product is culture, and getting people hyped up to consume culture is what the shows are about. And because the people who create the product literally create the media to spread the word about consumption, there's not much to do except turn off your TV. The cultural creators create the product, and then create the product to hype the product, all so we can consume the product and more and more of it. It's a purely capitalist endeavor at its heart, really.

I don't think so in principle. Movies and TV as an art form are pretty much, no matter whom you are or your background, one common thing we all tend to enjoy collectively. Even when theaters struggle, movies still gross a massive amount of money every single year. TV has evolved into streaming services, and these, along with cable have been producing work that has challenged movies to do better. It still heavily influences fashion and beauty products every year, and hopefully still spurs a collective dialogue for better or worse. Being able to brand a film with X Award winner, still draws more people into see a production because they tend to expect quality based upon that branding. I love film, and love reviewing it and provoking discussion about it. Really good acting, costume production, writing, directing, and film editing deserve something for their efforts. You don't have to watch award shows or enjoy them, and yes perhaps someone does need to breathe in some freshness to the enterprise - but that does not mean it's entirely outdated.

I can't help thinking that if we shouldn't give credence to what actors are saying about anything at an awards show, why should Ricky Gervais's words be given any more weight than any other actor who was up there the other night? After all, he's an actor too, no?

Well he was not making weird woke virtue signalling, he called them out for their hypocrisy.

If he went on a weird rant then yes he should be called out, but he does not

So we can only call out people if they are making "weird rants" but not if they are calling others out on hypocrisy? That's pretty subjective on both ends of the argument. A person could argue that it's hypocritical to be involved in an awards show praising the very people that are being called out for "weird woke virtue signalling" -- isn't it just using the same stage to promote one's own "weird virtue woke signalling"? "Wokeness" and "virtue signalling" can swing both ways -- one can be "woke" to certain concepts on the right or the left or wherever. While it's true that "woke" as slang has a particular meaning currently, underneath it is a greater meaning -- that one is "awakened" to certain truths about society. Perhaps those truths are on one end of the spectrum for one person, and on another for another. Just because these terms are currently reserved for one viewpoint doesn't mean they don't cover more than just that viewpoint.

Also I need to get lunch. I think my blood sugar is low because that makes way more sense in my head than on a screen.

Some of them could not help themselves and went and did exactly what Gervais had advised them not to.

I wonder about their PR, their Management, are they not told to lay off as it just makes them look weird and stupid?

When you fly around in your Private Jet and then lecture others on Global Warming, when you make millions as was pointed out working for people who have child sweat shops and talk about Equality?

But again, why does what Gervais said matter more objectively speaking?

It shouldn't. Especially if everyone could recognize he's just doing his atypical comedy bit. He's laughing at both negative liberal reviews and positive conservative reviews over on twitter. His persona is to roast and shock whomever is in the room at the time, and also earns him a great deal of attention from all sides which he will feed off of.

You know, they live in a bubble and here they had to take it live on TV.

But Gervais doesn't live in a bubble too?

I think (having had the benefit now of a very nice salad) that the point I'm trying to make is that we are going to argue that our sympathies are more likely to lie with the celebrity up there who is making a speech that agrees with what we also agree with. I know Gervais is a passionate animal lover and has done quite a bit of good in the world drawing attention to the plight of animal suffering and the cruelty of big game hunting. He's not exactly a Ted Nugent. As yuna said, he's up there to stir the pot and put the spotlight on him. He accomplished both of these!

Calling out hypocrisy always matters more as it shows what is behind the curtain.

I think the difference is he did not move to LA, he could have, and he was nearly 40 when he hit the big time and left the bed sit. I have seen quite a few of his interviews and he is well aware of the absurdities.

You can find plenty of coverage of the celebs praising Harvey and now it seems everybody knew.

a very nice salad

Q:  Why should we always knock on the refrigerator door before opening it?

A:  Because the salad might be dressing.

06-04-2007 = TSC stamps postal return-receipt for I-129f.

06-11-2007 = NOA1 date (unknown to me).

07-20-2007 = Phoned Immigration Officer; got WAC#; where's NOA1?

09-25-2007 = Touch (first-ever).

09-28-2007 = NOA1, 23 days after their 45-day promise to send it (grrrr).

10-20 & 11-14-2007 = Phoned ImmOffs; "still pending."

12-11-2007 = 180 days; file is "between workstations, may be early Jan."; touches 12/11 & 12/12.

12-18-2007 = Call; file is with Division 9 ofcr. (bckgrnd check); e-prompt to shake it; touch.

12-19-2007 = NOA2 by e-mail & web, dated 12-18-07 (187 days; 201 per VJ); in mail 12/24/07.

01-09-2008 = File from USCIS to NVC, 1-4-08; NVC creates file, 1/15/08; to consulate 1/16/08.

01-23-2008 = Consulate gets file; outdated Packet 4 mailed to fiancee 1/27/08; rec'd 3/3/08.

04-29-2008 = Fiancee's 4-min. consular interview, 8:30 a.m.; much evidence brought but not allowed to be presented (consul: "More proof! Second interview! Bring your fiance!").

05-05-2008 = Infuriating $12 call to non-English-speaking consulate appointment-setter.

05-06-2008 = Better $12 call to English-speaker; "joint" interview date 6/30/08 (my selection).

06-30-2008 = Stokes Interrogations w/Ecuadorian (not USC); "wait 2 weeks; we'll mail her."

07-2008 = Daily calls to DOS: "currently processing"; 8/05 = Phoned consulate, got Section Chief; wrote him.

08-07-08 = E-mail from consulate, promising to issue visa "as soon as we get her passport" (on 8/12, per DHL).

08-27-08 = Phoned consulate (they "couldn't find" our file); visa DHL'd 8/28; in hand 9/1; through POE on 10/9 with NO hassles(!).

That sounds very inappropriate.
