Well, this isn't the newest and shiniest topic, but it's where I'm starting on my forum search and guidance request (I have more topics to read, I'm sure).

US spouse and Canadian spouse will file jointly for tax year 2019 (nonresident alien to be treated as a resident).

Our immigration interview is likely shaping up to occur in April or May, so no SSN will be issued to Canadian spouse before US tax day. Obviously, then, Canadian spouse needs an ITIN, which we will obtain via the in-person appearance route at our local IRS office in Portland OR.

But, there's also an option to request an automatic extension, IRS form 4868, which gives you an additional 6mos to file taxes. Seems like that could be a handy safety-plan.

Any thoughts or experiences to relate on these matters, VJ community?

A new thread on your topic would be more appropriate.

Any extension form you file for your joint return is going to require a spouse SSN or ITIN. I suppose you could apply and leave off the spouse or put NRA instead of the number. If going to a tax office in Portland is doable, then that seems the cleanest way to go because you don't have to estimate taxes, wonder what to put for spouse number and such. You can just do your proper return the first time.
