Birth Certificate & Criminal Records: translation?

Hi everyone, sorry if the question was asked a million times but the search engine got me confused.

I know someone who applied for a K1 in 2018 and she showed up to her interview at the embassy with both Birth Certificate & Criminal Records certified translation (costs 50€ per page!), the documents were originally in French and the interview was in Paris, France.

I'm in the same situation now but nowhere in the instructions does it say those documents need to be translated in English and other applicant's experience read on the net tend to say it's not needed to have it translated, can anyone confirm?

Thank you so much and good luck everyone...love wins!

For my wife’s birth certificate, we had it translated since it was included in the I129F submission to USCIS.  I don’t believe she had her police certificate translated.  I am not sure where in the instructions this is outlined, but the general rule is if it is a document being submitted to USCIS in the US, then it should be translated, if it is only for the consulate in the foreign country, then it is not necessary.

Good Luck!

Consulates will accept paperwork in the local language.  You have to check the consulates web site if its allowed.  Most will allow it.  China and Vietnam allow documents in the local language, so there is no need to translate.

If you submit paperwork to USCIS they require English translations as there is no way they can have an interpreter for ever possible country.

It's hard to help you when you do not list your embassy.

We need a little housekeeping on your end. Many of our answers are predicated on the information you supply in your profile. When we look at the left column and can't determine your timeline OR your Embassy it's hard for us to give you a factual answer. Our answers will sometimes be tailored to a specific Embassy hence the reason for you to complete your profile. If you look at the profile of others here, they have a flag for their country, so it makes it easy for us to reply as we can quickly determine their Embassy. The country that should be used is the country where the interview will take place.

So, if you could help yourself out and complete your profile that sure would help us out when we want to reply to your question with factual information.

Go to the top right of this page select your name (it's on the upper right-hand corner)>my profile>[below your picture on the right column] edit my profile. Scroll to the bottom and fill in "Immigration Info". There now we can better serve you.

Once you finish that then return and you will see a flag in your profile. Select it and see what wonderful information will open up for you.

Thanks

Thank you everyone for the quick replies

Yes you did clearly state but what happens when you go to another thread to post a reply or a question? We all finish our profile so it's easier to identify the visa and the country. I also forgot to mention, if you don't complete the profile then we who are answering questions have the choice not to answer as our time is valuable. Good luck with the rest of your journey.

Since I know your embassy here is what is outlined in the P3 letter for document requirements.

All documents must be in English, Portuguese or French. Documents in all other languages must be accompanied by certified English-language translations. The translation must include a signed statement by the translator affirming that the translation is accurate and the translator is competent to translate.
