Sponsor spouse with foreign income...

Hello,

 

I am an American citizen and have lived abroad since 2013. My husband and I live in Japan, and since 2016 I have earned about $60,000 net a year. My work contract ends in Sept. 2020, and then we'll move to the States. Will I be able to sponsor my husband using my US tax forms from this income earned abroad? Is it true that I will not need a joint sponsor if I can show that I am ending my work in Japan and intending to move to the US and establishing work? I don't know if I will have a job lined up before returning to the US. It's unlikely. Can I show evidence that I will be looking for work in order to sponsor him?

Will the income continue from the same source upon return to the US? If yes, you can use it. If no, then you have no qualifying income.

You cannot sponsor somebody on foreign income from a job that you are leaving.

A job offer would not meet the requirements - that is not "current income". It's a positive factor for the totality of the circumstances regarding the public charge decision, but it does not meet the minimum requirements to qualify as an I-864 sponsor.

 

You can use assets (regardless of where they are currently stored). Assets for a USC sponsoring a spouse count at 1/3 that of income ($3 assets = $1 income).
