Traveling on Advance Parole - Jewelry

Hey guys,

Wife is coming back on Advance Parole and she wants to bring all the jewelry with her that we bought when I went to India as per indian customs (Mangalsutra, earrings and all).  Everything is around 350 grams of gold in jewelry (Estimate would be around 16 to 17K).  She is getting an export certificate from indian customs so she can always take it back when she returns for weddings and stuff.  My question is would there be any issue with US Customs?  Duty to be paid? Limit on how much she can bring without paying duty? etc....

Can she wear half of it ans declare remaining items - that would make it less than $10K limit I guess so no duty would have to be paid.

Has anyone come through without any issues or past experiences.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

No, it doesn't work that way. She has to declare all of it if everything all together is more than $10,000, including cash and gold and such.

But the requirement is to declare, it doesn't mean she has to pay taxes on it. Whether or not she pays taxes is a whole different thing. And I do not know the laws on that enough nor your situation enough to give any advice. For tax stuff, I call my own accountant, who I have on speed dial.

The declaration is not about paying duty, it’s about money laundering. So declare it as required, expect to be fine as they will understand why she has it, and whatever you do do not put the gold she is not wearing in a bag in the overhead bin, keep it under the seat in front of you (or your cubby if flying business) at all times.
