I have danced to that at 80s nights/Decades of Decadence parties in college.  I usually went as Madonna because she's been around forever and there are so many eras to choose from for a costume. I have been Like a Virgin Madonna (bustier/crinoline/lace gloves), Material Girl Madonna (pink sheath dress a la Marilyn with big fake diamonds), Vogue-era Madonna (pointy bra and trousers)... The last of these was made with papier-mache and nearly took someone's eye out so I retired it. :P

Back on topic (new year's resolution): What do you think are workable solutions to the very real existence of workplace harassment? I agree that AI is probably not a great place to start from.

OK I ignored it but maybe I should have asked, what were they doing to endanger their eyes?

Sitting down when I bent over to give her a kiss on on the cheek. It was really me more than her. I had a whole wire structure undergirding each cone and they were probably a bit more constructed than the real Jean-Paul Gaultier version.

I guess that is what you could call friendly fire.

Well TV turned on, wind howling and I am not going back out in that. And that TV Cruise add is back on. Now this is well before my time never mind the age of the people they show on the Boat so I assume is intended to attract their real customer base.

Admittedly she could sing.

must be 30 years for many, so we go back and asses all those from a current standard?

Depends how these, thus aged, compare with current standards. :P

I have an aunt who's considerably younger than my mom and dad, only about fifteen years older than me, and she was (is) really into that 80s/90s "college rock" scene at the time. She told me she never fails to be shocked when she hears something like Red Hot Chili Peppers' Under the Bridge or the Smiths' Hand in Glove on the supermarket in-store music system -- like, do you KNOW what these songs are about? I guess songs and other culture lose their ability to shock over time, just as they can gain additional shock value over time. There's been a lot of discussion over whether or not it is okay to still like Gauguin in the age of #metoo. It's a good conversation to have, I think, but I think when it comes to art of any stripe we need to understand taste is ultimately subjective, and for some an artist's problematic life and outlook may not be enough to end an appreciation for their art. Michael Jackson comes to mind, of course.

What's so bad about Under the Bridge by RHCP?

It's about serious drug abuse, which doesn't make it bad per se, but it does seem a weird choice for a supermarket.

So?  People use drugs.  People who have used drugs sing about it.  Meh.

And it's a catchy song.  If it was in a supermarket, very likely didn't even have words, just musak.

Oh, I don't have any objection to it, nor did she. I think the point she was trying to make to me was that when she was a kid, she never would have imagined hearing something like that in such an environment. Also, I can confirm that every market I shop at up here (everything from Whole Foods to Safeway to local markets not in a chain) plays songs with words in them, unless they're playing classical or jazz or whatever. Same thing when I was living in Burbank and Pasadena. My aunt lives outside of Boston so I guess it must be the same deal with whatever her local supermarket chain is.

I heard Britney Spears' Toxic at CVS yesterday -- all words included. :D
