Hi all

I just have to know if this can be true?

I am from europe and know an american man there.

He is born in USA back in 1959 and went to europe when he was 12 years old with one of his parents.

He is still an American citizen, but haven't lived or visit his homecountry since that time.

This is now 37 years ago.

He is now telling me that he would be able to come back just like this if he want and are able to bring with him his scandinavian wife and kids without any problems or waiting time.

Since it is a long journey for all of us in here I need to know if that man is right or wrong when he is trying to irritate me.

I will appreciate everything that you guys know about this.

Thank you

He can return at any time with a U.S. passport.

His children did not acquire citizenship through him as he did not reside in the U.S. for at least 5 years after the age of 16.

His wife and children would require visas.

Thank you

Mr and Mrs Bird,

Whether or not he's trying to irritate you I don't know.. But much of what you related is not exactly correct. Yes, if he is a natural born US citizen, and has a passport (US), he can come back with no problems. He can not come back 'just like that' with his Scandinavian wife and kids with no waiting though - he'd have to file papers and wait like anyone else.

Don't they need a background check on him since it's so many years ago?

He just needs a valid US passport - if he doesn't have one, he'll need to apply for one - they may run his name through some sort of check at that time - but can't answer that for sure.

And no - not as easy as he thinks..

If he still has the expired passport, it will be easier to renew, than to start from scratch.

I thought his kids can come with him if they are his biological kids? Reason I say that is because of the whole dual citizenship thing. I also know of a lot of military people who end up having their children in Germany while stationed there. Since they are born in Germany, the babies are considered German citizens. There is some sort of process they go through to get their children their american citizenship but I am not sure exactly how that works. Hmmm, okay, I really do not know but I have seen the military cases for sure.

Here it is, i found it. Am I understanding this wrong????

The concept of dual nationality means that a person is a citizen of two countries at the same time. Each country has its own citizenship laws based on its own policy.Persons may have dual nationality by automatic operation of different laws rather than by choice. For example, a child born in a foreign country to U.S. citizen parents may be both a U.S. citizen and a citizen of the country of birth.
