Hey everyone,

I got my EAD in my K1 visa process about 4 weeks back, but I still have not received an SSN to this date despite checking the box. It worries me a bit, since most people report that it is actually a pretty fast process. I will go to my local Social Security Office next wednesday to inquire, but I wanted to check if anyone else had to wait a while for their SSN after getting the EAD? Thanks!

The holidays has likely delayed the process..

we went to the local SSN office today.   K-1 POE, Married 2 days after, went SSN 7 days after.

They told us need marriage certificate and they can issue us a SSN - authorized to work SSN.

EAD not related to SSN card or number it seemed.

In my case, I checked the box stating that I also want an SSN number on my EAD form, and I read online it takes about a week to get it once you receive the EAD - it has been about 4 weeks for me though.

I thought the check box for issuing the SSN card is on the adjustment of status  green card application not the EAD?

I think it was on the EAD; either way, I checked a box on one of my applications, haha!

Yes K1s are allowed to work but only with authorization from DHS and it will say that on your Social Security Card. The authorization will come in form of your EAD or Greencard. Whatever happens faster.

EAD not because of being a K1, but because of being an adjustment of status applicant

YMMV

I might try to call the general number of the SSA. Not sure if they can give me any details about a specific case though, but worth a try.

I wouldn’t bother calling .. line up at the local SSA office an hour before they open.. with the necessary documentation in hand

Probably won't be able to go there before they open, only shortly after opening, but the reviews online for my particular SS office say it's usually pretty quick there, so I hope it'll work out.

Either way, I'll fill out the SSN application, and either they'll tell me that it's still being worked on, or it didn't work out somehow and then I can just turn in said application and show them my EAD+Birth Certificate and that's that.

Thanks for the help :)

That's not even enough to get a SSN, it's all really dependent on how bad your local SSA office is or the office that you get at the time.

We went to out SSA office months ago and to this day I still have nothing in hand, they just couldn't give me a SSN because "they couldn't verify my identity"  (I made sure to bring anything and everything they might need or ask for)

So @Yarusenai best of luck to you but expect the worst case scenario
