Because I couldn’t in all conscience say the oath until recently. Particularly with regard to giving up loyalty to my country of birth. Basically it was the stupidity of brexit that made me change my mind.

Do you have to give up your original country to be a US citizen ?

Hello,
Interview was smooth, not so quick because there was a good chat, my wife stayed outside and told me that other applicants were out in 10-15 minutes, mine was like 45 min, no problems at all.
I applied with paper under 3 years but it was close to 5 and because the wait time it turned 5 years.

My Oath ceremony is scheduled for next Wednesday 29, I believe there are no same day ceremonies in Tucson Office.

Best of luck for you all

congratulations!

I see. Understand the brexit is just plain stupid. However will you lose your right to NHS care (i.e.) universal healthcare in UK if you take up US citizenship too?

Wow. This helps me. Just now finished my N400 interview at Kansas City Office and I passed. The officer told me that i should receive OATH ceremony invitation in the mail and it will be in a court house. From the info on this link looks like it will be on August 16th but only the notice will tell for sure.

Congrats!!

i hit 5 years in March (I’m silly and forgot that I was within 90 days when I applied and applied as 3 years). I was hoping that would make things move a little faster, but maybe not.

glad to hear yours went smoothly!

Since I’m not resident in the UK I’m not entitled to nhs care anyway. I‘d have to be living there for 6 months before I became eligible again.

I can keep my British citizenship. However you do have to recite the oath when you naturalize and I am not a person who could do that if I had reservations. Which I did until recently.

The oath specifically says

I hereby declare, on oath, that I absolutely and entirely renounce and abjure all allegiance and fidelity to any foreign prince, potentate, state, or sovereignty, of whom or which I have heretofore been a subject or citizen; ...”

i have hereditary titles in my home country which is given along with my names. I did a name change & renounced it while applying for US citizenship.

See my post about this one.

US doesn’t care whether you have other citizenships but some countries doesn’t allow dual citizenship.

What I’m trying to explain is that personally, I could not bring myself to say the oath until recently. To me saying an oath is something you should do only if you have no reservations. Perhaps I’m too purist about this, but it’s an extremely serious matter and no one should take it lightly. It’s not about giving up citizenship in my case, it’s about giving up loyalty which is perhaps more nebulous but  no less important  in my mind. Until I was able mentally to give up loyalty to my original country i was not prepared to say the oath. And if that meant 37 years of being a resident alien and not being able to vote or serve on a jury, then that was the price I was prepared to pay.
