Medical exam date and Embassy Interview date not aligned

Pretty much a rant, but also wondering if anyone experienced this and how long before they scheduled anothed visa interview appointment.

So, on Dec. 23 my husband's visa interview was scheduled for the 9th of January.  Low and behold this is awful because as we are calling the doctor for the medical exam the earliest she can see him is on the 30th of January!  Plus because of the holidays people are om vacation.

Also the doctor is charging an arm and a leg at a whopping 850 chf (~850 USD). So we want this to be a one time thing. Still cannot believe that thia woman cannot squeeze us in for an exam.

The embassy is telling us to try and make it to the January 9 interview. But how is it possible without the medical exam?!

Any advice or thoughts will be great. Hope everyone had a great holiday and happy new year!

You can still go to the interview without the medical, all that will happen is that the visa will not be approved until the medical is received. Nothing else to do but just to go to the interview and then wait for the medical to reach the consulate after so that the visa can be approved

Our CR1 Journey:

USCIS Stage:

  • Feb 14 2019: NOA1 (NSC)
  • July 31 2019: I129f NOA1
  • Sep 19 2019: I129f NOA2 (Denied - 50 days from NOA1)
  • Sep 19 2019: I130 NOA2 (Approved - 217 days from NOA1)

NVC Stage:

  • Sep 27 2019: Sent to Department of State
  • Oct 31 2019: Case number received (34 days since sent)
  • Nov 1 2019: IV & AOS fees received & paid
  • Nov 14 2019: IV & AOS submitted
  • Dec 18 2019: All docs accepted, but one additional doc requested (5 weeks from submission)
  • Dec 18 2019: Requested doc submitted
  • Feb 19 2020: Documentarily Qualified (9 weeks from 2nd submission, 14 weeks from first submission)

Interview Stage:

  • Mar 11 2020: Interview letter received
  • Apr 1 2020: Interview date
  • Mar 17 2020: Interview cancelled due to COVID-19
  • August 3 2020: Rescheduled letter received, new appointment August 25 2020
  • August 25 2020: Visa approved at interview! (558 days from NOA1)
  • September 10 2020: Embassy received passport in mail
  • September 15 2020: Passport with visa in hand

October 11 2020: Arrived in US!

So the other issue i forgot to mention is that my husband is scheduled for a business trip to the USA and to drop off our son. Can my husband just bring the passport back to them?

Attend the interview, provide the medical exam results after the interview.  It is very common.

My other issue is that my husband has to be in the USA for work starting from the 16th of January till the 25th of January...

I know what you're talking about.  And my health insurance didn't even cover it.

That being said, any chance your hubby could go to Basel, Geneva, or Bern?  At the time I applied, there were doctors available there as well (and I think at least Basel is a bit cheaper)...

The interview is for my husband. After the interview you have to surrender your passport correct? However, he needs his to go on a business trip on the 16th of January to the USA and the medical appointment is on the 30th of Jan.

They are all closed as of now. The Basel one is gone from the list. So we are hoping that Bern will be reasonable and hopefully he can take on my husband sooner.

He can request to keep the passport, since they wouldn't be even close to placing a visa in it until after the medical.

Oh really?! That is great news! Thank you for that tip. Does that mean after the medical interview he can just go back to the embassy to surrender his passport for the issuance of the visa?

You need to be talking to the embassy about scheduling and when they need your husband’s passport.

What is certain:  The medical does not have to be done before the interview.
