Well you could Board at 7 in the Prep, I think maybe a quarter were Boarders, like everything no doubt there have been changes.

For whatever reason my friends were day.

Just seems so nuts to send kids away that young. Voldy said he thought 13 was perfectly acceptable as an age to board and he would have gone at 11 if his father had let him (mum was ready to push him out of the home ASAP but dad wanted his boy around). I just went to the school down the street and I managed to make it into my second tier Ivy :P so I don't think I missed out on educational opportunities.

I seem to remember many had parents who traveled, worked overseas, now there may have been others who just did not like local options and had them boarded, just do not remember. For me the Grammar was nearer but not by much.

Yeah, for Voldy it was his dad starting to travel a lot for business to Asia, and his mum wanted to move out to the country instead of staying in London. Not great local options out in the country so it made sense to leave. His sister went away to another school for similar reasons. With Alex it was opportunities to go beyond what he could do at home with tutors.

I do not remember anybody being home tutored well maybe extra tuition but I am not sure that would have come up in conversation.

Anyway a long time ago and I have lost touch with pretty much everybody, we all went our own ways.

I didn't know anyone homeschooled until I met Alex and his sister. And I grew up in America, land of homeschooling/unschooling. But I guess there is a law in Scotland that lets parents do that. His parents were convinced they had little geniuses that could only flourish in a nontraditional environment.

Alex just saw me write that and is making me say that he and his sister greatly enjoyed getting to run around and be weird together and they turned out just fine. Jury's still out I say! 😊

Scotland has its own system, I would imagine there must be some get out for unusual circumstances anyway, however I think it is extremely rare, well I have never come across anybody who did this.

Alex told me basically if you never were in the school system to begin with your parents don't need permission to homeschool. Or at least that was the law in Scotland when they were doing that (mostly 90s).

Big excitement: he said he will cook for me tonight! A "new year, new me" effort I think. I'm terrified but kind of excited to see what counts as cooking. 😂

Well, did he turn out just fine educationally? Seems like he's made it this far.

Yeah, he did just fine. Went to a great uni and got a first in mathematics, and went back and got a Master's in the same thing. Career in finance. Being taught at home by tutors allowed him, he has told me, to really dig in where he was interested, and that was maths from a young age. Going to boarding school at 16 helped him get a bit more socialized, he says.

Good for him. We aren't all maladjusted unsocialized weirdos. I mean we sorta are weirdos in our unique ways, but we manage to find ways to strive for success for the most part.  😆

Hey @Burnt Reynolds, I saw this today online and thought of you but totally not in a morbid way, I promise!

Here's a general question for everyone:

This morning I got a Facebook friend request from someone I didn't know, but we are (apparently) in the same FB group together. The group has, from what I can tell, a lot of overlap with VJ itself. Anyway, this person is clearly married to a USC and lives somewhere there is a lot of visa fraud (not giving specifics). His last status update I could see on FB was a pic of him and his wife with him saying something like, "So proud to call her my Mrs.!!!" And let's just say there is a bit of an attractiveness/age gap between them that was very apparent. I cannot think why this person would be reaching out to me -- I think I have only ever liked posts in the group, never made a post. If it were you, would you just delete the request or respond to the guy, tell him to stop skeeving on random women on the internet and then block him? I am sure I can't be the only woman in that group he's done this to.

Thoughts appreciated! I am not on FB much, really only to take part in a couple of groups, only one of them having to do with immigration. I only accept friend requests from people I have ever known in real life, so this is an obvious delete.

I don't accept friend requests from people I don't know. Even then, there are at times persons I would never want all up in my business per say, that includes some family members. I would simply put them in a place called 'facebook limbo' where you leave them dangling, never accepting or rejecting their request for years at a time, or just block them. Whichever works best.
