When the clock struck 12:00, I was inside a MRI machine having a CT Scan, no kidding, Followed by blood work and a chest x-ray, Thank God it was nothing too serious, the good part it is, the diagnosis provides me a valid reason to send NVC a expedite request :)

I'm hoping it's a blessing in disguise.

Holy mackerel!  May your medical issues be minor and temporary, and yield an approved expedite request.

  • 2 weeks later...

So here's an issue of ethics:

A good friend of mine was eligible for the stimulus payment last year because her 2018 income was below whatever the cutoff is ($75k? $100k?). She had graduated from business school in 2018 and by 2019 she was making well over that amount. She delayed filing her 2019 taxes until after the payments went out because she didn't want to leave money on the table as she put it. Instead she invested it. I get it -- there was a loophole where she could legally delay filing 2019 taxes until after the payments went out.

However today she calls me and tells me that despite making some serious $$$$ now she received today in the mail a preloaded debit card with about $550 on it from the Treasury. She wasn't expecting it. I told her that she should either return it or use the money to make a generous donation to a charity, since she makes enough that $550 is something she could spend these days without thinking too much about it. She told me too late! She'd already bought herself a $350 jar of Creme de la Mer moisturizer from Neiman Marcus and was going to spend the rest on Doordash delivery of surf and turf and some champagne this weekend. I was appalled. She told me if Steve Mnuchin was stupid enough to send her a debit card with $550 on it she was going to go, and I quote, "full welfare queen" and spend it on absolute luxury.

What would you have done? Personally, I would not have bought a $350, 2oz jar of moisturizer.

When you are young, you cannot understand the importance of moisturizing. I am so glad your friend has wisdom beyond her years and comprehended the value of using government benefits to help keep her skin supple and youthful.

I hope that she was wise enough to put the original check that was invested from this spring in a Roth IRA or she is going to get hit with capital gains taxes, but she probably learned that in business school.

We don't need people like her suffering.

1) Do not tell anyone that I have purchased anything with the money.

2) As a poor person I do not hang with someone that spends that much on moisturizer.

3) Smile, nod and say, rich people problems, as I budget what repairs or bills I need to spend the money on.

4) Yell at them that they could have at least spent the money on something more useful like shoes.

5) Give them a lecture that they have no idea what it's like to be on welfare.

I didn't need mine either. I was going to donate it, but I ended up adding to my kids college fund. I figure they are the generation that will get stuck paying for all this.

No one is required to pay the stimulus back even if they didn't qualify, but this is part of the reason they resisted a stimulus package for months. A lot of people need so much help, but a lot of the money is going to people who don't.

You can donate it to me. As of yesterday I have to put a crown on one of my 7 year old's front teeth.
