Chocolate Chip Caramel Brownies

- Melt a bag of caramels with 1/2 cup evaporated milk (double boiler works best)

- Optional, add dark chocolate powder or peanutbutter or both

- 1 box cake mix - I usually use double chocolate fudge, but any flavor as long as it has pudding in the mix

- 1 1/2 sticks butter melted

- 1/3 cup evaporated milk

- Mix cake mix, butter and evap milk into a dough

- Take half the dough and spread it evenly into the bottom of a well greased/buttered 9x13 pan

- Bake at 350 F for 6 minutes

- Approximately 12 oz of chocolate chips (I usually use a mix of dark and white chocolate, but any will work)

- Drop chips over the hot cake out of oven

- Drool caramel over chips and cake

- Take remaining cake dough and spoon it over caramel as evenly as possible (don't worry about gaps)

- Bake at 350 F for 15 minutes, then allow for cooling

Alternatives

- use cherry chip cake mix and peppermint baking chips

- instead of caramel, make a batch of no bake cookies  with or without chocolate (not too dry) and use that over the chocolate chips.

So here I am yesterday in a big box store, after exhausting my online options just trying to find a suitable replacement saucepan (apparently there is a pan shortage due to high demand and no aluminum). I didn't find my pan, the shelves had been stripped clean and the help was useless. But the husband was insistent to buy me some new boots so here we were standing in line. There are many registers in the store but for some reason they only want three open which causes a massive queue. The guy in front of us has nothing in his hands and is irritated his wife is taking so long as he's holding the line for her. He looks at us and generously offers to step out of the line and let us go in front. He's now standing next to us, scanning the rows looking for his wife. Behind us is a woman - and for these purposes we will call her ''Karen'' because let's face it, she fit that description in every way. Firstly, I can hear her grumbling that the guy was being nice to us and that the line was very long - but to be fair no one had very many items, so it wouldn't be a long wait.

But then the man's wife finally arrives. Oh my. You can see she is the sort of woman that is not to be trifled with, confident, and will not be bullied. First she berates her husband for getting out of line. He cannot get a word in edgewise, so we try and explain. She's barely listening at this point, but we usher them back in the line because it really is no trouble, and the husband (head bowed in misery nods a sigh of relief) is thankful.

Now "Karen" hasn't been paying attention I'm assuming, and decides to announce as loudly as she can that it is so rude that "these kinds of people" have 'cut in line'. Oh the type of disdain in her voice seems to mean something to me. She's going on and on about it. My eyes are about ready to pop in embarrassment for my entire species. My husband tries to defuse the situation by explaining, but it's too late. The. wife. is. ENRAGED. How dare this person accuse her of cutting in line and running her mouth and being stupid. HOW DARE SHE. I am now in the middle of catfight shouting match - and the wife is winning. It's like a fight from The Real Housewives. The husband is hanging his head in shame and trying to calm her, but she won't be defied. The Karen storms out of the line with swearing - how dare she be spoken to that way? Well ummm..... c'mon lady!

Why denigrate a whole lot of women named Karen?  It would seem that this would be an overly broad generalization.  I can certainly think of another word to describe these women without passing disdain onto anyone else except for maybe a certain canine gender.

As to what actually happened in line, pretty much see that everyday.  A few weeks ago my wife went to Sam's Club and she absolutely hated it, she said the lines were long, and no additional lanes were opened.  We have never had the same issue at Costco even when the lines are long, things move very quickly.  My wife and I have a rule that if someone is going to hold a place in line, they are going to do it with product to purchase, and if the other does not get back in time, they have to wait in line themselves.

So with that, it is OK to denigrate a whole bunch of people?  I have no one in my family or friends named Karen either, but that does not keep me from seeing oppression when it exists or is artificially created.

I think the patriarchy may have been hiding at that very moment for fear of their lives.

I meant no offense by the 'Karen' thing. It's the best way I could describe what was going on for reference. We were both bewildered why she decided to pick a fight with someone who very clearly was going to react in a negative way. I am pretty sure the husband was going to be berated all day about his critical error for getting out of line, and the other lady was likely going to knock back some glasses of wine and moan about 'trashy people' having the audacity to put her in her place. I've really thought about a million ways we could have handled the situation, and I'm not sure what else we could have done. It always happens around these parts... in B'more we just would have all kept our mouths shut.

This has nothing to do be being politically correct, and it is in fact oppression by using a word like that to broadly describe a entire group of people.  There are plenty of words out there that can be used to describe the behavior.

I could have picked another word, unfortunately it would be considered too naughty for VJ. 😉
