Well, the die is cast. 15 years, 1 month and 2 days ago, I peeked over the back of a sofa at a boring party and found a tall, dark-haired guy squinting to read a magazine in low light and drinking out of a flask while he tried to hide from his ex. Yesterday, I married him. It was a long, long journey with a few false starts, a lot of self-doubt, two failed marriages to other people (one each), a transatlantic move, and about a year when he was living here but I was so scared of messing things up again, I wouldn't move north to be with him. I finally decided to give it one more try and it stuck. :D

Yesterday I married my best friend in front of my family and his twin sister in my parents' backyard, next to the swimming pool and in front of the little shed I used to spend hours writing in in high school. I will not lie -- this is a strange time to get married, and it was ZERO like how I'd thought the day would go. I didn't plan on drinking whisky and watching Borat 2 the night before, or eating barbecue and cupcakes for the reception. I didn't think I'd have a mobile wedding officiant (!) handle the ceremony, or instead of a wedding gown be recycling a dress I last wore to a Memorial Day Republican fundraiser in 2016 with my ex-husband.  I didn't think I'd be streaming the video to all the family members we'd have loved to have had with us. I'd thought his daughter would be there with us to hold our hands, and to have been part of our vows. :(

But it was pretty much perfect, even if it was supremely weird. We included our daughter (I now think of her as mine too, just a little) in the ceremony as best we could remotely and she even dressed up to attend by Zoom. Alex wore the most hideous tartan trousers -- some tartans are not as beautiful as others and that is ALL that I will say on that. My sister and his sister have formed an alliance to make fun of us constantly for being disgusting newlyweds. My dad cried, a lot, which made my mom cry, a lot. We took naps after the barbecue because there was a lot of champagne involved, too, followed by family movie night. And more champagne.

And now I finally I have my ring. 💍 Next stop, AOS

Worthy of its own thread, in the Immigration section?

Congratulations.

Congratulations Mr and Mrs Layla!

Doesn't he own a kilt?

Yes, but (1) he doesn't like his legs (they are fine) and (2) usually what happens when American women get around a Scottish man in a kilt (he says) involves a lot of objectification, which he is not comfortable with when the other American women present are my mother and my sister. Now if I'd brought around that 18 year old sister wife he has in mind, that might have been a different story.

Thank you! It has certainly been a long time coming, but worth it.

Sandwich making still happens, but I am a one-man sandwich-maker now.

Actually, I made my dad a sandwich today with some of the leftover pulled pork. Not sure if that counts.

No honeymoon for the foreseeable future, which is okay. :) There's a lot that's not ideal at the moment, and this is a very, very small sacrifice. He's back at work today and even went into the office, and I am helping his sister settle a bit more into the apartment she's staying in nearby for the next couple of months (once she wakes up). Honestly, the way cases are right now back there I think she's a lot safer from the virus here at the moment. After a worrying mini-spike our case numbers in the county are dropping again, and more businesses are due to open up for indoor services. I don't mind being super cautious and slow if it means that we don't have to have big shutdowns again to flatten things. If we could keep her here through the winter, we would but obviously she only gets 90 days on an ESTA/VWP and she wants to be home for Christmas.

Understandable.  Well hopefully you had a nice day for your wedding, and all the family far and wide were able to partake if even via a webcam.

Thank you! We didn't get a chance to go to that hand sanitizer sale in Glendale before it closed, because we didn't leave my parents' house in Burbank until about 5. But we did a quick drive over to NoHo to drop by the Ford dealer (Sunrise, if you remember it) so Alex could ask when they were going to have the Bronco models available to look at, as he has put in a reservation for a 2-door. Anyway, in NoHo there were quite a few teenage girls selling sanitizer on corners that I spotted, all flying the Armenian flag. Good for them!

Also found out the Broncos are coming to look at but not test drive on the 10th, so I guess we have to go back up then.

This, alone, is the most propitious sign in this entire scenario, si and zzz LL ma'am.

Take many, take them frequently, and take them together, si LL ma'am.

07-20-2007 = Phoned Immigration Officer; got WAC#; where's NOA1?

09-25-2007 = Touch (first-ever).

09-28-2007 = NOA1, 23 days after their 45-day promise to send it (grrrr).

10-20 & 11-14-2007 = Phoned ImmOffs; "still pending."

12-11-2007 = 180 days; file is "between workstations, may be early Jan."; touches 12/11 & 12/12.

12-18-2007 = Call; file is with Division 9 ofcr. (bckgrnd check); e-prompt to shake it; touch.

01-23-2008 = Consulate gets file; outdated Packet 4 mailed to fiancee 1/27/08; rec'd 3/3/08.

04-29-2008 = Fiancee's 4-min. consular interview, 8:30 a.m.; much evidence brought but not allowed to be presented (consul: "More proof! Second interview! Bring your fiance!").

08-07-08 = E-mail from consulate, promising to issue visa "as soon as we get her passport" (on 8/12, per DHL).

Good to know -- I never had a new car until Voldy bought me one, and then they were always Mercedes. Except for the used Porsche I bought myself when I thought I was being frugal with his money, and to be fair I was -- it was at least 10k less than what he had told me to spend but it wasn't a Merc. 🙄 And Alex, sorry Lord Alex according to Ban Hammer :P, wants to go full American with his first new car in the US, so a Bronco it is. They were really nice when we went in, he explained why we were popping in and they didn't try to get him into anything else. They know they got him already. They did try to sell me an Escape and my sister in law a Mustang, and I was like: hang on, I look like a soccer mom but she looks like a woman who drives a Mustang???

Alex said yes, that's accurate.
