Death Valley.  You can climb Telescope Peak, the views are amazing.  Not sure about food though, aren’t all the restaurants closed in CA except for take out?

Thank you! I have been to Death Valley before, but not with him. It's a terrific idea, relatively close to home too. And since the idea is to go in September, restaurants are likely to be reopened here. The governor is making sounds about reopening restaurants with limited seating soon, particularly in less densely populated and less affected communities. We're getting cautiously optimistic here. Of course social distancing and masks are here to stay for a while.

**tap tap** is this on?

So we were talking about what we want to do when things open up again, in particular going on holiday. I am not keen on flying in the near future, so I was thinking road trip, maybe in September. A sort of pre-honeymoon. I am looking for suggestions! The initial plan was to drive back up to Berkeley for a few days and see old friends, then keep driving north. But there is SO much we haven't seen together yet in this country. We want to do about 10-12 days in total.

We want:

*Not Vegas (done Vegas a couple of time together, and while it's fun for a short visit, I want something new)

*Wineries a plus

*Something with some gorgeous vistas

*Decent food available (I am not pretentious -- I just don't want to have to rely on McDonalds every night)

We are completely open, the only restrictions being that going east of the Mississippi is going to involve a LOT of driving, more than we can handle. Suggestions for spots along the way are welcomed. We both love this country so much and are eager to see new things. He's never been east of Vegas or north of Mendocino (except for one short visit to Seattle) so this is all new for him!

I think that like the most of us our vacation plans will be put off or cancelled indefinitely. As far as recommendations goes there's plenty of places up my way, but you don't want to ride that far. I can only go by the recommendation of a Norwegian friend that did the CA coastal redwood areas of the national park and then went all the way up into Oregon to explore national park caverns and such. I believe he did experience some wineries along that path. He had a lovely time, but that sort of thing might not be for your tastes. Both we and most of our friends are national parks/hiking/exploring kinda people, so these are all things of wonder to see sometime. We also like the tiny house or cottage experience instead of traditional hotel staying or full out camping and you can find plenty of those up that way. No need for fast food, just bring and cook your own. You'll save money.

This is exactly what we were thinking about doing, just exploring up north. I don't need to stay in a five star resort all the time, I know my fiancé would prefer to go a bit rustic.

We're really hoping that by September things are going to be more normal in terms of travel here. I'm glad Newsom is taking his time and talking about letting counties decide for themselves soon what's appropriate.

I am also coming around to the reality that my wedding will be very, very small. I am going to run with it! Hopefully by October we can have 20 people in one place but I can make do with 10.

I suggest Death Valley as well but a different route than what you are used to, and it's a bit of a drive tbh with you but very pretty. Drive up the 14 on to the 395, then take a right at the 190 in Olancha and follow it into Death Valley on the backside of what most people do. You are actually able to look down into Death Valley from above and it's very pretty. Just hope that the jets are flying that day because they love to buzz cars going about 100 feet of the deck.

Ubehebe crator, Darwin Falls, Golden Canyon, and Telescope Peak are great hikes with great views.  Yeah, hopefully in September the restaurants in Stovepipe Wells, and Furnace Creek will be open.

Never experienced any flyovers when I was driving over Towne Pass.  We saw a few flying around when we were on top of Telescope.  We stayed in Beatty NV when we were there, so we came in from the East.

They love to fly around that valley on the back of Ridgecrest and up around Lone Pine and the Owens Valley area because China Lake is right there not to mention Edwards is right down the road. I experienced a fly over going down that pass and it almost scared the piss out of me to be honest because I wasn't expecting it.

We actually go out there in July and August for vehicle testing sometimes.  The climb from Stovepipe Wells to Towne Pass and then down into the Panamint Valley is beautiful.
