Spider update: it has moved to the top of the bathroom mirror. 90 minutes until spider relocation occurs.

The spider has been removed successfully without causing harm to the little buddy. :) 🕷️

Just got off a bunch of calls back to the UK to wish everyone happy new year. And I just finished the last episode of Holiday Baking Championship. And I'm still stuffed up. 😕

Also, opened my first-ever bottle of Maker's Mark.  First one rocks, now an Old Fashioned.  Seemed like a rational start to a new year.  I'm sure @luckytxnwill agree even if none of ye heathens do.

That's a VERY good idea! It's funny you posted this when you did, because I saw the notification when we were struggling to open a bottle of this: 3c98Rif.jpg

Now, you can't tell from my picture but you can from that link that the top of the bottle is sealed with a THICK layer of gold wax. Like, half an inch. And Alex was totally flummoxed by how to open this thing, and was gouging away at it with a VERY sharp knife and I was terrified that he (or me, depending on where that knife went) was going to end up stabbed or without part of a finger on New Year's Eve and we wouldnt have even had any liquor before the incident! And he was saying to me, why can't this be like that bloody Maker's Mark wax, you just peel that c***ing tab thing off and Bob's your uncle. And as he hacked away, I saw your comment about Maker's Mark and I thought: ooooooooh, spooky.

He got it open and it is indeed absolutely gorgeous.

Lol, Bob's your uncle... haven't heard that in a while now!

MM is pretty good.  I have decided I am more of a corn than rye guy.  Corn is much much smoother.  Almost got Bulleit today,  until I saw it had rye in the mash.

I really need to get back into brewing.  Well, minus the illegality and the long oaking times, that is...

Alex likes the rye Bulleit, but I'm sort of ehhhhh. It's nice enough but not my first choice.

Brewing!!!! I have never done it, except my sophomore year I lived with a weirdo who made mead in the fridge which was... almost drinkable. It certainly was alcoholic. She was really into the Society for Creative Anachronism and this was part of her thing, I guess.

That is NOT brewing.  Well, not distilling, at any rate.   Mead is like making beer.  Weak, and legal.

Have you tried Buffalo Trace?  I am admittedly a newbie to bourbon. And don't have much of a palate for scotch.

More of a rum and tequila guy myself.

No, I haven't had Buffalo Trace. I have had a couple of decent (supposedly) bourbons but in this household it tends to be scotch, scotch and more scotch. Sorry, whisky. The only one of the bourbons I can remember is Blood Oath.

Tequila is a no on this side. I have tried many times but no. Rum... I think I mostly have ever had it only in mixed drinks.

I know it is buyable in CA.  Try Don Papa from the Philippines.  On the rocks, obviously, NOT mixed.  Can only get it in NY and BOS over here (minus the Philippines, obviously).

I can't seem to wrap my tongue around the sharpness of rye, though I try from time to time.  Scotches just aren't my forte, I reckon.  Though I ALMOST bought glenmorangie tonight instead of Maker's Mark.   Maybe one day, when I grow up...

I'm being made to watch the Monty Python marathon on IFC which is playing in the background while he plays Civ V on his laptop. If you'd asked me at 17 what I'd be doing 17 years later for New Year's it might have been sipping champagne at some fancy party in the Hills, or lounging on some Polynesian beach, or something terribly fancy and grown up. It probably wouldn't involve blowing my nose repeatedly in a tiny A-frame in someone's backyard in Berkeley while the love of my life played video games and we were watching something called "Full Frontal Nudity" which really only featured illustrations of full frontal nudity. (I would post a link but I am afraid of violating the TOS.) Also, I would have been wearing a much nicer outfit than a pair of sweatpants and a tank top. :P
