They have always had a tendency to overdo things.

I have no idea about make up, I did see an advert for using an air brush to apply makeup, which seemed logical. I think Kate has always looked prim. And she is not far off 40.

Well, she is only three years (and a bit) older than me, and a year younger than Meghan, and she looks tired. I suppose that's what having three kids will do to you! Alex's ex has custody of their one child, and I have to say when I saw her last year she looked less tired at the end of the four days we were around each other without their six-year-old. Maybe it's sleep? I know that Kate is supposed to be a hands-on type of mother, even with the nannies, so maybe it's that. But less eyeliner would help! Oh, and that airbrush makeup isn't very good, btw. I didn't order it but I did some investigation and the reviews... not great.

Yes, I remember Boris from when I was over there being a bit of a joke. Alex said he was passable as Mayor of London and more competent than he expected -- Al was in London for both of his terms of office. Times are very weird indeed though.

Himself has tucked into one of the massive bags of Walker's Meaty Variety crisps ordered at Christmas time and has ploughed his way through three individual packets of smoky bacon crisps and one of roast chicken. I reminded him that while it was not true he had gained any weight recently, surely this wasn't helping. Then he reminded me that I had set out not to be a nag, and that this was approaching nagdom, and that perhaps if I packed him off each morning with a packet of crisps and a KitKat like his ex used to do, he might not need to dip into the big bag at night.

Seems reasonable, one thing I noticed like most things here is that American Crisps seem to last for ever even if you leave the bag open. UK ones go stale very quickly, just as well as they tend to pop bringing them up to this altitude. I was a sucker for Marks and Spencer's Peanuts.

I miss those flavours, just thinking back to when a little bag of salt came in the bag that you mixed in.

I have heard about the ones you add salt to, which seems so strange to me. Salt & Shake? I have gotten very used to putting in a big order at Christmas at the British Corner Shop, Voldy and Alex both have to have particular things to make Christmas Christmas. Alex wanted a Bird's custard trifle kit this year, which was very weird and kind of gross, but I made it as requested because I am a nice person. Also if you ever need Bisto granules, I may have obtained the total export allowance to the US for the year. I make my own gravy, but he likes Bisto. Apparently during his bachelor days (and almost-divorced days) he used to get tins of corned beef which you open with a key and heat them up in the microwave then smother the slices in Bisto. I am informed this is a fine delicacy and 100% counts as cooking.

My mum considered it cooking.

Can be served with chips and peas.

I am sure Delia has a good recipe for Custard, I prefer mine hot and poured over your dessert of choice.

That actually involves cooking though -- battering, frying, etc. Much fancier than opening the tin, putting it on a plate in a huge chunk, microwaving it and then slicing it up. Bisto in a measuring cup. It's endearing in its own way.

Yeah, I make a decent real custard. And a decent real trifle. But I understand the pull of certain childhood foods and how they are very special and evoke home. My favorite British pudding to make is summer pudding. For American desserts, definitely lemon meringue pie! Or banana pudding with Nilla wafers, which I guess is my equivalent of the Bird's trifle.

I like him better and better too! :P I didn't appreciate being compared to his ex (who is a genuinely lovely person and a very good mother to his daughter) because she indulged a bunch of man-behavior I'm not crazy about, like switching off with video games every night or leaving little hairs all over the bathroom from shaving or not taking any part in food prep or pretending not to know how socks and jeans make it to the hamper. I have a cleaner in once a week to keep things tidy but the day to day work is still down to me. I don't begrudge him this because at the moment, I'm the functional equivalent of a housewife. But there are many things that can be done by him -- and in his defense, he is improving, probably because the beatings continue! :D

The video games I am fine with, as long as we spend some time interacting with each other. Work has kept him late at the office recently (for real -- we video chat and I can see him there) so when he gets home, I kind of want to have a little time being together before he passes out. And I get not wanting to engage after a hard day. We are working on a compromise. We're trying to find a game I'm interested in that we can play together. I'm not a gamer so I am looking for suggestions from anyone who has them. Just has to be multi-player and I'd prefer not to have one with a ton of carnage.

Layla! I do have suggestions (my partner and I are gamers) :)

Portal 2 has a great coop mode, and it's mostly puzzle solving with no carnage. I think Portal 2 was my favorite to play with the partner so far. We also played Trine series, great graphics, and cooperation is the best part. Civilization V and VI are good strategies, and you can play coop, but I think competitive is more fun. There is also Mortal Combat :D it is all carnage but so exaggerated that it's comical. A great way to decide who is doing dishes tonight!

Science is not a liberal conspiracy.

Thank you!!! He plays Civ V a LOT. I genuinely did not know there was a mode beyond "Mmmmm sounds interesting about your sister, can you get me another beer, love, while I work on building these trade routes." I will look into Portal 2 and Trine. Yay!!!

Video games for couples.

1) Gears of War - chainsaws and gore but oh so fun

2) Halo - simple pew pew not a lot of gore

3) pretty much all Lego games no gore lots of fun

4) Divinity - complex RPG for couples (hard to find these days for console)

5 Diablo -  very fun RPG

6) Borderlands - RPG lite shooter hilarious fun, gore is cartoony.

7) A Way Out - prison escape game, not really any gore whatsoever. Good story.

8 Lovers in a Dangerous Spacetime

9) Human Fall Flat - hilarious puzzle physics based game

10) Stardew Valley - farm life with a good story

11) Saints Row - thug life with crazy stuff

12) Crackdown - super agent that can eventually fly, climb the tallest buildings, and collect shiny objects

13) Destiny - not really any gore, shooty adventures in space. Not really hard, point and shoot at things that take long time to die. May have to play with others sometimes and want to strangle them.

14) Minecraft - stick it in creators mode if you want to relax and sandbox. We've created to scale versions of real buildings.

PC games:

WoW

Guild Wars 1 & 2. (all free to play).

Aion.

There are great couch coop games out there, and the majority of stuff we play coop. Good indie games out there too. We also adapt single player games, like Sims and Final Fantasy.
