Hypothetical situation:

I have the option to use 1 of 2 potential joint sponsors. One makes $50k a year retirement income and one makes $24k a year working income, both with stable income history. Obviously, I’d like to use the higher income but I may not have that option. Assuming that I am required to have a joint sponsor, will immigration favor one over the other, or are they only concerned about meeting the income threshold?

So this is more of a “check off the box” red tape item for the immigration officer then?

Perhaps, but it is their obligation to make sure that the beneficiary will be not become public charges while in the US.

I get that, it’s a reasonable requirement. I’m in the process of finding a joint sponsor, I just want to make sure it’s rock solid to reduce the risk of getting denied.

Easier to answer your question if you completed your profile,  requirement varies with the embassy

I would not call it that.  The public charge issue is evaluated based on a totality of circumstances.  We have seen many more public charge denials lately.
