If both petitioner and beneficiary  live abroad do we automatically need a sponsor for IR1, regardless of income?

Sponsorship is not needed if you have sufficient liquid assets.   3xI-864p amount is a minimum.   It is up to the CO.  We were approved but showed twice that amount AND the CO had a lot of questions for me, the petitioner.   As a backup I had an I-864/I-864A from my parents.

Maybe.  The petitioner will always be the primary sponsor.   Sponsor's (or Joint sponsor's) current income (if using income) must be US based which will continue after relocating to the US.  Assets can also be considered.

Are your parents Us Citizens too? Or can the sponsor be from outside US?

Yes my parents are US Citizens.   Sponsors must be US Citizens or LPRs.

You say regardless of income,  has the USC living abroad been filing US tax returns along with form 2555 for the foreign income exclusion?

Do more research on the process, there is lots of great information here on VJ, read and study the guides.  In addition to sufficient US-based income or a joint sponsor, you will also need to prove US domicile for the US petitioner or evidence of intent to re-establish US domicile.  The process takes a year or more from filing the I-130 petition until the visa interview in Rio so you have lots of time to figure out the income/sponsor issue and the US domicile issue.  Good luck!

They ask for original documents for interview. Does anyone have any experience with the interview and having a joint sponsor? We can bring the original affadavit of support but do they really expect us to take our joint sponsor's original passport and joint sponsor's original marriage certificate to the interview? Or are copies sufficient for those documents?

No.  Copies will work.

A copy of the passport is fine.  I haven't seen a request for a marriage certificate for a joint sponsor.

I should have clarified, the marriage certificate was for my joint sponsor and her household member (spouse). Thank you!
