Let us add our immediately mandatory magnetic tax to our global-warming funds that we already send to our all-knowing, so very sage betters, and sacrifice the rest of our freedoms to them.  Only in this way can the planet be saved.

06-04-2007 = TSC stamps postal return-receipt for I-129f.

06-11-2007 = NOA1 date (unknown to me).

07-20-2007 = Phoned Immigration Officer; got WAC#; where's NOA1?

09-25-2007 = Touch (first-ever).

09-28-2007 = NOA1, 23 days after their 45-day promise to send it (grrrr).

10-20 & 11-14-2007 = Phoned ImmOffs; "still pending."

12-11-2007 = 180 days; file is "between workstations, may be early Jan."; touches 12/11 & 12/12.

12-18-2007 = Call; file is with Division 9 ofcr. (bckgrnd check); e-prompt to shake it; touch.

12-19-2007 = NOA2 by e-mail & web, dated 12-18-07 (187 days; 201 per VJ); in mail 12/24/07.

01-09-2008 = File from USCIS to NVC, 1-4-08; NVC creates file, 1/15/08; to consulate 1/16/08.

01-23-2008 = Consulate gets file; outdated Packet 4 mailed to fiancee 1/27/08; rec'd 3/3/08.

04-29-2008 = Fiancee's 4-min. consular interview, 8:30 a.m.; much evidence brought but not allowed to be presented (consul: "More proof! Second interview! Bring your fiance!").

05-05-2008 = Infuriating $12 call to non-English-speaking consulate appointment-setter.

05-06-2008 = Better $12 call to English-speaker; "joint" interview date 6/30/08 (my selection).

06-30-2008 = Stokes Interrogations w/Ecuadorian (not USC); "wait 2 weeks; we'll mail her."

07-2008 = Daily calls to DOS: "currently processing"; 8/05 = Phoned consulate, got Section Chief; wrote him.

08-07-08 = E-mail from consulate, promising to issue visa "as soon as we get her passport" (on 8/12, per DHL).

08-27-08 = Phoned consulate (they "couldn't find" our file); visa DHL'd 8/28; in hand 9/1; through POE on 10/9 with NO hassles(!).

Vital services we take for granted rely on accurate GPS coordinates (not just our GPS but other systems like GLONASS that we use, especially as we get further north in latitude, which means we rely on Russia as well), and it really makes me appreciate the constant work it takes to update it. After all, we're not just a floating ball, but a spinning ball moving at blazing speed around a star that itself is moving. While I see no reason to believe there's anything perilous about this in our existence, or our future generations, the main takeaway from this is that we really don't know as much about things as we like to believe.

I agree, especially on the last sentence.  Which ALSO applies to GT and climate change.  The earth has been doing it's thing for millions of years before man came along, and will continue to do so if out environment changes and we become statistics just like the dinosaurs.

Not so sure the North Pole moving like it is (speeding up in the last century) will make much of a difference with the vast number of satellites we have in orbit between us and Russia today.  Eventually, ALL navigation will be GPS-based, and the poles will only exist to eventually flip and wipe us off the face of the earth.

Perhaps you are thinking of the geomagnetic south pole, which sits just off Vostok station near the center of Antarctica?

The geomagnetic north pole is situated just off Baffin Island in the arctic circle.

The North Pole of my compass points toward Baffin Island which means that region is a magnetic South Pole.

You lost me there... care to elaborate?

All magnets have two poles, where the lines of magnetic flux enter and emerge. By analogy with Earth's magnetic field, these are called the magnet's "north" and "south" poles. The convention in early compasses was to call the end of the needle pointing to Earth's North Magnetic Pole the "north pole" (or "north-seeking pole") and the other end the "south pole" (the names are often abbreviated to "N" and "S"). Because opposite poles attract, this definition means that Earth's North Magnetic Pole is actually a magnetic south pole and Earth's South Magnetic Pole is a magnetic north pole.[8][9]

The direction of magnetic field lines is defined such that the lines emerge from the magnet's north pole and enter into the magnet's south pole.

and time for a tbone joke....
there was a company in ww2 that used to make compasses for the army.  it was "tate's compasses".

and they were often defective - hence the saying "he who has a tate's is lost"

Nice try, but no.   No one on earth utilizes the convention you are saying, though it is technically correct.
