I am the petitioner my wife's(k-1) daughter came over with here on a k-2 visa and now we are working on COS for both of them. My daughter was never issued an A-Number. Do we use my wife's A-number on the I-485 and other forms or do we leave blank?

Welcome to the forum.

COS? I am not familiar with that acronym here at Visa Journey (VJ). Based upon your inquiry, I suspect that you are in the middle of preparing the Adjustment of Status (AOS) applications for a K2 derivative visa for the child and are  inquiring about an A-number or Alien number for the child. First, each person has their own unique Alien-number (A-number). It is is kind of like a Social Security Number (SSN), you only use your number and no one else. Right? K2 visa holders do not get their A-number until they file their I-485 AOS application. On their Form I-797C Notice of Action (NOA1) AOC receipt number, the K2's A-number should appear (for the first) right above their name in the same box. So, until you receive their NOA1 AOS receipt, you will not know what their A-number is, therefore any boxes requesting that number blank. After you get it, use it to your heart's content.

Since you are doing AOS applications, I would strongly suggest that you concurrently file for Employment Authorization Document (EAD, I-765) and Advance Parole (AP, I-131). If you file AOS/EAD/AP concurrently, the fees for the EAD and AP documents are waived. For details, see the Special Instructions tab in this USCIS link: https://www.uscis.gov/i-485 . The K2 child can apply for their Social Security Number (SSN) with their EAD document, otherwise you have to wait until they get their Green Card (GC). The AP document is useful if the mother or child has to go home for an emergency visit. The applications are a cinch compared to the mind-twister AOS applications. I will provide some useful links to help you with AOS applications and other useful information. The VJ examples of filled-in applications are a bit dated, but you should be able to get the general idea. Regarding SSN, your wife should apply for her SSN as soon as possible, or she will have to wait until she received her EAD or GC. Same some time and fill out the application at home, take it in to your local Social Security Admin. (SSA) office, sign the app, and submit.

Finally, we need a little housekeeping from you if you will. Many of our answers are predicated on the information you supply in your profile. When we look at the left column and can't determine your timeline OR your Embassy it's hard for us to give you a factual answer. Our answers will sometimes be tailored to a specific Embassy hence the reason for you to complete your profile. If you look at the profile of others here, they have a flag for their country, so it makes it easy for us to reply as we can quickly determine their Embassy. The country that should be used is the country where the interview will take place.

So, if you could help yourself out and complete your profile that sure would help us out when we want to reply to your question with factual information.

Go to the top right of this page select your name (it's on the upper right-hand corner)>my profile>[below your picture on the right column] edit my profile. Scroll to the bottom and fill in "Immigration Info". There now we can better serve you.

Once you finish that then return and you will see a flag in your profile. Select it and see what wonderful information will open up for you.

Thanks, and Happy Holidays!! 🎄🎁
