Manipulative isn't she. My MIL had a bag of tricks very similar. Didn't work on me either. And  it backfired on her as well.

There is nothing you can do for them that is enough. They are either the victim or the hero.  Never anything their own behavior has brought them.

Various times over the years all of my MIL's children have cut her off. Even her favorite. He called  her a Class A Predator, and he was the golden haired child, so that says something.

Her entire life has been a pattern of self-centered, arrogant thinking and behavior, a total lack of empathy and consideration for other people, and an immense need for admiration. She has got to be in the limelight all the time, always the center of attention, and woe betide the person who gets in the way of that. My MIL was  indulged her entire life, the only child of only children, and then by a succession of men, single or not. From what I understand, she remains  bullying, manipulative, selfish, patronizing, and demanding. Her son-in-law wants her out of his house. Her daughter doesn't think she can do that to dear old Mum. They are in counseling. My money is not on a successful outcome of that.

You are right, it didn't  have to be this way. But it is what their poisonous behavior earns them in the end, and there is nothing you two can do about it. This is not your fault, nor his. It isn't up to either of you to mend. 💔

You could be describing her like you've spent time with her!

I wish us all peace without them

I have spent too long with my MIL, that type of personality disorder is easily recognized once you've seen it. As is typical of her type, I did get a long rambling non-apology after Himself died, which she sent a friend of hers to forward to me.  She was still trying to make herself the center of attention. Making excuses, outright lying, attempting to justify her behavior and not owning her nonsense. When I got to the bit where she was 'begging for forgiveness for the terrible hardship she had caused us" I actually laughed out loud. Just more manipulation.  Still doesn't work, I suppose I was meant to say all is forgiven, and when they kick you out of course I will come and look after you, having no one else in the country to do for. Hard no.

Try your level best Trudi, not to let her leave a mark on you both. Easier said than done, I will tell you that. Even now when I think about some of the miserable meanness we were subjected to I'd very much like to give her a good swift boot up the jacksie.

Wife throws a fit the day before Thanksgiving out of a jealous rage.

Did she expect to get mad at me for nothing, and expect me to do everything on Thanksgiving to feed her sister's family?

There's a turkey soaking in brine in the garage.

Thanksgiving is cancelled in this household.

Happy ###### Thanksgiving.

08-07-08 = E-mail from consulate, promising to issue visa "as soon as we get her passport" (on 8/12, per DHL).

08-27-08 = Phoned consulate (they "couldn't find" our file); visa DHL'd 8/28; in hand 9/1; through POE on 10/9 with NO hassles(!).

Thrilling Viernes Negro report, Black Friday man:

We learned by accident that the last Sears store within Many,000,000 miles was closing, grrrr man.

We set forth between monsoonings, road trip for we man.

First, we stopped at our favorite not-that-near-us thrift store, long time man.

For Viernes Negro, they had Many (2+1) of their Many (2+2+1) tags at half-price, heaven man.

We got the following for Mini-B., see man:

 -- Many (2+2+1) sleep-pants, Many (2+2) pants, Many (2+1) underwears, 2 pairs socks,

and one shirt, well-clothed wee man

We got the following for us, see man:

-- pair socks, 2 misc. items, Many-piece ([2+1]-piece) queen sheet set, all half-price man

Total = $Many ($2x2x2x2 + 2x2x2), qualifying us for a scratch-off card for next visit, wow man.

We then lunched at Wendy's with use of a coupon, save we man.

At Sears, everything was Many% (2x2x2x2 +2+2%) to half-off, plus an extra Many% (2x2x2x2 + 2x2x2+1%) off, Viernes Negro man.

We learned that Corporate was closing Many (2x2x2) stores, and that this was one of them, next-nearest one not within Many00 miles man.

For Mini-B., we got the following, see man:

 -- Many (2+1) pants, a shirt, and a Many-pack ([2x2x2+2]-pack) socks, well-clothed wee man

For us, we got the following, see man:

 -- Levi's, 2 Many-packs ([2+1]-packs) underwear, Many-pack ([2+1]-pack) socks, surprised to find all man

Total after ending Many% discount = $Many ($2x2x2x2x2x2 + 2x2x2x2 +2+1), steal man.

It then began monsooning and we were tired, so we returned to the casa, un-road trip we man.
