Olympic gold medalist Lindsey Vonn and National Hockey League star P.K. Subban got engaged again, but this time she popped the question in what she wrote was a "non-traditional move."

...

Though the couple first got engaged in August, the Olympic skier wrote that she wanted to present Subban with a ring as a display of "equality."

"We talk about equality but actions speak louder than words," Vonn wrote on Instagram. "Men deserve engagement rings too and this is what PK deserves."

Hmmmmmm... maybe I should get Alex a ring -- he deserves one too. I mean, I'm still waiting on mine (apparently coming in the new year) but it might be nice for us both to have symbols of commitment. 💍

Anyone have any thoughts about engagement rings for men?

LOL noooooooo.  I think he would DEFINITELY reject that idea. I was thinking something tasteful and subtle, but nothing with jewels. But then it just starts looking like a wedding ring at that point if there's nothing differentiating it as a woman's ring generally does. So maybe I get him an engagement watch? I had wanted to get him a particular one for Christmas but he said it was a colossal waste of cash, so I held off.

The beauty of CSR is how you can do virality to the unwitting.

It'll be truly equal when people realize, regardless of who gets asked, you don't need diamonds or rings to get engaged (or married).

Ummmm, I would NEVER give him a gemstone ring. (Vulgar on a man, imo.) Also, my engagement bracelet had some diamonds on it, but it was primarily sapphires and was also a family heirloom. So no, I don't buy into the diamonds or bust mentality. But ultimately what the couple chooses should be up to them. Sometimes it could be a diamond. (My first one was, well, several diamonds, but I had no choice in it.) Or whatever you want it to be. Maybe not even a ring. Maybe it's a bracelet your fiancé's loosely-moralled great-great-aunt finagled from her lover. :innocent:

I used to ask my husband ''the question'' all the time like some running joke. Turned down every time, on account of him being the man and all and needing to do it 'proper like', though he thanked me for the effort. After he proposed I did end up buying him an engagement ring band. I felt it very important to do so as our original 'promise' rings of 15 years prior were completely destroyed and he had spent a big chunk of cash on me. No objections on his part.

He is so lucky.  He got engaged using a bracelet he had no use for and didn't cost him a thing.

It is possibly the most frugal thing he has done in a long time. He gave his ex-wife a family ring for their engagement, so he saved money on that, too. (Plus he got it back in the divorce.) He did shell out money on a "promise ring" for a woman he never got engaged to, maybe he learned a lesson from that. I asked him what she had promised to do in exchange for something that cost that much money and he had no reasonable explanation.

Well, he was with his ex-wife for five years before she left him. And the other one... they were together for a year, before he dated the ex. So not that busy. :) I've known busier serial monogamists. (Not me.)
