Naturalization Background Check

Is it the background check that takes up the most amount of time in an application? Or is it the actual processing of your form?

I agree, processing times will be greatly influenced by the local office workload handling a specific case, and the wait time before an IO actually starts working on a case.

It's the wait to get to an actual person to "adjudicate" your case. The background check would most likely be done by that time and is part of the case file. For a straightforward no criminal history no issue case, I would be surprised if they spend more than an hour or two on your application, if that.

FBI can check by computer for all states lived in

but if you lived in other countries it will slow the process 

your travel listed on passport especially if to the middle east will slow it down

I am sure people who are applying for Naturalization had lived in other countries.

I don't know about all the answers. I know 2 people from the same country (in the middle east). They both filed N400 with 2 weeks difference. One got his citizenship in 5 months and the person took 13 months.

The greatest influence in time of processing for the N-400 is the local office.  Country of origin is a very minor factor.

Pretty strange........maybe one file was misplaced for a few months........weird.

Could be that one had a more lengthy background check, or it sat on someone’s desk for a long time.  The point is who knows as most of us are not privy to the inner workings of USCIS or DHS.

If that can be a factor, did not seem to be much of one for us.

But, yeah, the waiting for someone to get to your app is my guess for the bottleneck/long wait time.

I wonder if this is done manually or if there is some sort of system that assigns cases to officers randomly.

What about travel to certain countries?

And would having Global Entry for example help fasten the checks?

 

I realize the answers are all speculation at the end of the day but just having a discussion.
