Travel while EAD replacement card in process

Hi everyone!

i just graduated in the US. Applied for EAD card on time and got approved within a month. My card was “delivered” to my apartment building on November 1st but I never received it. So lost in the mail. Long story short, USCIS gave me the tracking number first week of December and made me submit a whole new I-765 application. I received the new receipt notice on December 20th. I start work January 6th and they already told me I can start with my receipt notice stating that my replacement EAD card application is in process.... now my real question. My grandparents are not doing well and I had a trip planned to go home. I changed my flight when my first card got lost. But now just realized I can technically go in and out of the country “as long as application is pending”. I’m thinking about leaving the 24th and coming back in the 2nd in the morning. Does anyone know if this rule applies to my situation? Or if the first application just doesn’t count now?

thank you for your help!
