Can we start the process for a K-1 visa if we're both abroad on a working holiday visa?

I'm already in Australia and my partner will be coming in a month.

Yes

YMMV

Yes, just realize that all I-129F packets still go to the lockbox facility in the US. So, if you mail it be sure to have reliable couriers. Or to be safe, you can prepare the packet and mail it when you get back.

I learned the hard way, I hope YOU don't have to. Advice: learn, learn, learn.

Yes although the most logical and cost-effective route would be to marry now and file a CR-1 spouse visa. That way the immigrant can work immediately upon arrival and not be left in limbo with no real “status” for months and have to go through a very costly adjustment of status process before they are even considered a resident here.

What made you think the K-1 was the right choice?

Timeline in brief:

Married: September 27, 2014

I-130 filed: February 5, 2016

NOA1: February 8, 2016 Nebraska

NOA2: July 21, 2016

Interview: December 6, 2016 London

POE: December 19, 2016 Las Vegas

N-400 filed: September 30, 2019

Interview: March 22, 2021 Seattle

Oath: March 22, 2021 COVID-style same-day oath

Now a US citizen!

The K-1 visa takes way less time than the CR-1. Money is not a problem, we'll save up enough to pay for adjustment of status and like 6 months of me not working.

So yeah, i was only worried about not being able to get the visa while both of us were outside the U.S.
