President Donald Trump faced a social media backlash after an off-color joke suggesting the late Democratic Congressman John Dingell was in Hell.

Dingell, a WWII veteran who represented Michigan from 1955 to 2015, died in February aged 92. His wife Debbie Dingell fought and won his seat and now sits in Congress.

Trump talked about an emotional call from Dingell to say thank you after he gave her husband what he described as "A plus" treatment upon his death, including the lowering of flags and offering the use of the Capitol Rotunda.

"She calls me up. 'It's the nicest thing that's ever happened. Thank you so much. John would be so thrilled. He's looking down, he'd be so thrilled. Thank you so much sir.' I said that's OK, don't worry about it," Trump said, relaying the call.

"Maybe he's looking up, I don't know. Maybe. Maybe. But let's assume he's looking down."

Trump is a troll and that is all you need to know to understand him. Sometimes there are trolling fails.

What makes this all the funnier is all the outrage farming over this comment by people who don't practice their own faith.

Which describes not only the fraudulent nature of outrage culture, but the people invoking it, and their so-called "beliefs", equally made-up, equally weaponized, and equally worthless.

I wouldn't say so, saying "offensive" things and speaking his mind is how he's always got attention.

The problem with outrage culture, beyond the sheer stupidity of it, is the sudden memory blackholing by the political demographic that mostly engages in it where they forget it was them who for decades advocated for people to be able to offend others without the kind of repercussion they now push for others to receive. I was on their side then, because it was clearly the "right" thing (socially-> freedom and thick skin > toxic outrage farming), and nothing has changed, whereas they've completely inverted their viewpoints, primarily because "outrage" is suddenly a weapon people have given them their way with, and "orange man bad".

I am not offended, I just think it was in very poor taste, regardless of politics.  Trump is doing a great job and could be more effective with out saying something that is both hurtful, unprofessional and in very poor taste. Come on! Attacking idiots like Pelosi is great, but going after someones dead husband saying he might have went to hell is indefensible. When we support such stuff we are not better than those that blindly defend stupidity from  some members of the far MDL, that have wished Trump dead or posed with a decapitated fake head of Trump.

Hmm, seems to be a bit more manufactured outrage.  Based on what he said, it doesn’t seem he definitely said Dingall was in hell.

How is attacking Pelosi great? She's a woman, and women must be treated with respect! She's also old, and the elderly must be treated with respect! She's also a mom. Attacking mothers is heinous! Very poor taste! Therefore it's indefensible to attack the elderly, women, and mothers! Pelosi is off-limits and attacking her is unprofessional and in poor taste.

When one wants to be outraged, it sure is easy to find all the necessary criteria to invoke it. But that's why, until recently, we'd just dismiss outrage farmers. Now we evidently pay attention to them, or worse, validate this. Until recently, we'd rationally look at the context of what's happening. Someone that literally says things of shock value all the time, no one really gets surprised. That's Trump's brand. He speaks his mind and doesn't have a filter like the politically correct do. Until the marriage and normalization of "orange man bad" and "outrage farming", no one cared about the offensive stuff Trump regularly said, and the things he said most certainly were not demonized (or caricatured) even remotely in a way they are now. Difference is night and day.

You're wondering if his brain works, but I think in this circumstance you're succumbing to the media's forceful tactics of endless demonization to solidify a narrative in people's heads. You're ignoring 1) who he is, what he normally says/does, 2) that the media (especially your source) does this for everything Trump says.

I am very rarely swayed by anything in the media. when I saw the headline, I read his actual quote before I formed an opinion. I just think there are some things decent humans don't do and implying someones dead husband could possibly be in hell for political gain is not one of them. I guess that is why I have the famous reputation for being the middle of the road guy. My opinions are not based on party affiliation.

Politics has become much like college football. Let a Gator get arrested, and its because they are all vial thug criminals. Let a bulldog get arrested, and the poor kid was singled out by overzealous po po.

To me it's along the same lines as attacking the children of President's it was wrong when they did it to Bush, It was wrong when they did it to Obama. Now when the become of age and enter the political game, fair game. Chelsea is now fair game as are the Trump kids

What outrage? It is just in poor taste  on the anniversary of the man's death. We have no pretense of changing the man, but we don't have too look at certain behaviors and say, "yes, this is someone we can aspire to be"

Whether she is in politics/ public life or not , the widow deserves respect from the leader of the free world.

Doesn’t someone have to give respect to get respect?  I have heard her talk in many interviews, she is just as partisan as her late husband.

No giving respect to others is what an adult does regardless. Leading by example is what a leader does. This is a poor example.

It seems like this country has lost its ability to distinguish between personal attacks and partisan politics.
