According to Brown, the author:

The Da Vinci Code is a novel and therefore a work of fiction. While the book's characters and their actions are obviously not real, the artwork, architecture, documents, and secret rituals depicted in this novel all exist (for example, Leonardo Da Vinci's paintings, the Gnostic Gospels, Hieros Gamos, etc.). These real elements are interpreted and debated by fictional characters. While it is my belief that some of the theories discussed by these characters may have merit, each individual reader must explore these characters' viewpoints and come to his or her own interpretations. My hope in writing this novel was that the story would serve as a catalyst and a springboard for people to discuss the important topics of faith, religion, and history.

Many people think that it is more than fiction and are taking it as truth. Have any of you read the book and what are your opinions?

Fiction.

I read Dan Brown's Angels & Demons and wasn't that impressed. Others have told be that the Da Vinci Code and Angels & Demons are very similar so I will be skipping any of Dan Brown's future works.

definitely fiction ... but good on him!! the general public is generally ignorant and easily fooled!! he's made a bundle of money for being aware of that fact!

there are too many untruths from leornardo, priory of sion, opus dei, etc ...

Check out The Da Vinci Code: Fact or Fiction, by Hank Hanegraaff and Paul L. Maier. Leaves the Da Vinci Code without a leg to stand on.

I enjoyed the read (I'd just finished an English lit course and needed something "light"). I didn't take much of it to heart as truth, but then I don't necessarily consider the Bible to be anything more than a work of fiction either. So for me it was fiction built on fiction.

I'm interested to see how Tom Hanks does with the character in the movie. I do tend to like his characterizations so we'll see.

Definitely fiction even though he touches upon some interesting theories about the holy grail and so on. But like all the other stuff going in that direction, there's too little certainty to speak of fact. Makes a great story anyway despite all its clichees...

It's a very good book and worth the read... but it's definitely a work of fiction that has historical references...

Although one could argue that both Angels and Demons and the DiVinci Code have anti-Catholic tones to them...

A good read, but fiction based on the following book: The Holy Blood and The Holy Grail (named Holy Blood, Holy Grail for the U.S. audience). I read that too and that's also a good read, as is it's sequel The Messianic Legacy. As to if it's true or not...read it and decide yourself!

I should restate that... It's a work of fiction based on a theory which is presented as "fact" in Holy Blood, Holy Grail.

Dan Brown CLAIMS it's based on fact, but then Clive Cussler could easily make a similar claim for "Polar Shift".

(FYI, not read any Dan Brown's, but HAVE read "Polar Shift").
