This one is for @Neonred, warning not for the squeamish. Compares poorly to third world shanty camps.

Can't view article unless paying customer. Looks horrific, but then I thought to myself at least some of these people have campers or cars... the ones that squat around these parts are lucky to have a tent or nothing at all.

Is there no one to help these people in California? Or are they very much like here - resistant to assistance and can't get jobs due to drug/alcohol/violence history?

Basically as you would expect there are as many causes as there are people.

I think I know where this is, need to send Layla down to do a on site inspection.

I tried viewing this article on an exclusive IP address that never reads the NYT, and still wanted me to register, only showing me the intro animation.

That being said, doubt I'm missing out on much, there's likely little we'd learn from this that one didn't already learn from on the numerous Tucker/FNC segments.

All in all, my (former) home state is so woke and increasingly diverse, even typhus will soon be given voting rights.

Wasn't that the full first name of Ty Cobb?  He could vote, it's presumed.

06-04-2007 = TSC stamps postal return-receipt for I-129f.

06-11-2007 = NOA1 date (unknown to me).

07-20-2007 = Phoned Immigration Officer; got WAC#; where's NOA1?

09-25-2007 = Touch (first-ever).

09-28-2007 = NOA1, 23 days after their 45-day promise to send it (grrrr).

10-20 & 11-14-2007 = Phoned ImmOffs; "still pending."

12-11-2007 = 180 days; file is "between workstations, may be early Jan."; touches 12/11 & 12/12.

12-18-2007 = Call; file is with Division 9 ofcr. (bckgrnd check); e-prompt to shake it; touch.

12-19-2007 = NOA2 by e-mail & web, dated 12-18-07 (187 days; 201 per VJ); in mail 12/24/07.

01-09-2008 = File from USCIS to NVC, 1-4-08; NVC creates file, 1/15/08; to consulate 1/16/08.

01-23-2008 = Consulate gets file; outdated Packet 4 mailed to fiancee 1/27/08; rec'd 3/3/08.

04-29-2008 = Fiancee's 4-min. consular interview, 8:30 a.m.; much evidence brought but not allowed to be presented (consul: "More proof! Second interview! Bring your fiance!").

05-05-2008 = Infuriating $12 call to non-English-speaking consulate appointment-setter.

05-06-2008 = Better $12 call to English-speaker; "joint" interview date 6/30/08 (my selection).

06-30-2008 = Stokes Interrogations w/Ecuadorian (not USC); "wait 2 weeks; we'll mail her."

07-2008 = Daily calls to DOS: "currently processing"; 8/05 = Phoned consulate, got Section Chief; wrote him.

08-07-08 = E-mail from consulate, promising to issue visa "as soon as we get her passport" (on 8/12, per DHL).

08-27-08 = Phoned consulate (they "couldn't find" our file); visa DHL'd 8/28; in hand 9/1; through POE on 10/9 with NO hassles(!).

It's complicated. Extremely complicated. There is the political will on every end of the political spectrum to provide assistance, and some of the larger municipalities have voted for tax increases to fund housing, aid and rehabilitation for the homeless. Speaking as someone who has voted -- twice! -- for such increases, I am very disappointed and will be reconsidering supporting these efforts in the future. Why? Because we're mired in a mess of environmental regulations, NIMBYs, study after study after study without actual action, compassion fatigue (guilty of this myself), the question of who is "deserving" of being housed first, homeless people who do not wish to be off the streets, the emptying of mental institutions in the 80s, ever-growing income inequality... That's just the tip of the iceberg -- I'm no expert in this, just someone who is sick of it all, from politicians to advocates to NIMBYs to the violence and the drugs and the poop on the streets. My neighborhood is not too affected, but my non-fiancé's is basically a shantytown on some streets. The mayor is working to bust some of the more onerous planning/zoning regulations to allow for cheaper and faster (but safe) housing construction. I hope it works. We need it.

I know where it is. I live about 10 miles away but it might as well be another universe.

Well I think I have been to that Home Depot, years ago and at that time there were day labourers outside which at that time we did not have in Colorado. I assumed you would have been further north.

No, I'm in West Berkeley. I measured it on Google maps and it says something like 10-12 miles depending on the route. I've never had any real reason to be around there (no home improvement projects).

I was in I guess North East, never worked out the divisions but anyway up the hill. So you are north of Emeryville, handy for IKEA.

LOL, yes, I know the IKEA there. I'm closer to Design Within Reach and Sur La Table (both walkable) so I tend to visit those when I need a home good of some variety. I'm going to miss this part of the world -- move out date is now set for January 11th, less than a month. Santa Monica has its own homeless issues so I won't be escaping much -- if anything, I think it may be worse than in my neighborhood now. A lot of the crime though around the new place is apparently drunk tourists!

Well it will be warmer, remember SF could be surprisingly chilly.

LOL.  Guess I deserve that.  Watched the intro, but I am still not caring much about CA.  Did see some of that on a trip to Portland and Seattle.  Have been to CA once about six years ago, San Francisco before they started living and pooping in the streets.  Had a chance to go back this past October for the American Dental Association meeting but passed for the obvious reason.

Nor where I am, it was minus something last night, you do not live long without shelter.

I ... kind of prefer it colder? Tights/cute sweaters/coats, etc. It is a little milder at the beach where I'll be living than downtown LA (where Voldemort dwells) and I will get to wear some wintryish stuff but the opportunity to go all in on sweater weather is more limited. I checked the weather today and it's going to be mid-50s to mid-60s for the next 10 days.

I will miss the rain. :( I guess we always want what we can't have.
