Canadian police check from UK

I have been reading conflicting reports about getting a Canadian criminal record check. My fiancée is just about to file the initial application. I lived in Canada for a total of 2 years and 8 months so I know I will need to apply for this. At what stage of the application should I do this. Also do I need the fingerprint check or just a background check. As i am outside of Canada the fingerprinting has to be done in the uk for £79 then sent to a Canadian company to be digitised for $250 and criminal check is $25 is this the correct process? Also what reason do you give the RCMP for the police check? Private or immigration, heard conflicting answers on this as well. Anyone gone through this process from UK? How long is it valid. Should I get the ink finger prints done soon and wait for a certain stage of application to send to Canada?

The Canadian regional forum is the best place for this answer

Is it the same for any country you apply for a visa then. As this is for my k1 visa. Also the process is totally different from inside Canada.

The petitioner sends in most of the information and documents for him/her. The beneficiary brings all their documents to the interview. So the petitioner is a USC and does not have to submit anything other then court papers for any arrests but not any police certificates as USCIS will query the FBI and local data bases for criminal records.

Petitioner must submit local (their country) police certificates (follow instructions in the P3 letter from your embassy once your file arrives at the embassy) in any country that you have lived for more then 6 months from the age of 16. Also, if you were ever arrested in a country (that you visited but didn't live for more then 6 months) you must submit those records also.

Hope that gives you a better understanding of the process.

Doesn't matter if you have never been arrested but it is up to prove that with a clean PC.

Also there is a discussion about the new requirements for PC and fingerprints found here

If you are not interviewing in MTL then make sure you get the Privacy Act one. You'll know it's that one because it WONT have finger prints on it. I ended up getting both done as a precaution and the lawyer accidentally sent the "Visa/Border Crossing" one (this one has your face and finger prints) and it was rejected by the NVC.

Since you haven't completed your profile it's hard to ascertain just what you are doing. In one of your post you stated " I know I need a Canadian police check just not sure which kind." So you have me confused now. Complete your profile and then we can help you. Instructions are below.

We need a little housekeeping from you if you will. Many of our answers are predicated on the information you supply in your profile. When we look at the left column and can't determine your timeline OR your Embassy it's hard for us to give you a factual answer. Our answers will sometimes be tailored to a specific Embassy hence the reason for you to complete your profile. If you look at the profile of others here, they have a flag for their country, so it makes it easy for us to reply as we can quickly determine their Embassy. The country that should be used is the country where the interview will take place.

So, if you could help yourself out and complete your profile that sure would help us out when we want to reply to your question with factual information.

Go to the top right of this page select your name (it's on the upper right-hand corner)>my profile>[below your picture on the right column] edit my profile. Scroll to the bottom and fill in "Immigration Info". There now we can better serve you.

Once you finish that then return and you will see a flag in your profile. Select it and see what wonderful information will open up for you.

Thanks

Here is the rule concern Police Certificates. If you follow the link it will explain the procedures to secure a PC from Canada while living in the UK.

Required for all countries where you have lived for more than 6 months since the age of 16 and any country where you have been arrested, even if you were not a resident there.  U.S. police certificates are not required.  Police certificates from certain countries are unavailable or are obtained directly by your Embassy (rarely does your embassy execute this step).  Fingerprints are required for certain countries.
