Traffic Violation after DQ at NVC

Yesterday, I received a traffic ticket for crossing a divided section on the highway in San Diego (CA Code 21651), as I tried to get onto a ramp. I had a valid driver's license, insurance, and no drugs or other parties were involved.

I was DQ'd at the NVC on October 15 and am current awaiting an interview at the Montreal consulate. When asked whether I was convicted of a crime on DS260, I stated 'no', which was true at the time.

My plan was to bring the traffic ticket with me to the Montreal consulate and to update them when I interview there. Does anyone foresee any issues with this plan? Is there anything I should do beforehand? Should I expect a delay at the Montreal consulate for this infraction?

Thank you for your time.

I highly doubt a traffic ticket like that is a “crime”. Anyways, have you been convicted yet or were you just issued a ticket?

Thanks for responding.

I should clarify: on the DS260 it asked "have you ever been arrested or convicted of any offense or crime?"

I was issued a ticket, and the officer told me to expect a more formal letter from the judge in 10 business days.

Do you intend to take it to court, or pay fine/no contest by mail?

Either way, until the response-due date or the court date, it isn't a conviction for the offense... after such time, it is (unless you opt for court and it winds up dismissed).

Bring documentation of the outcome to your interview, whenever it gets scheduled :/

Thank you, Hawk Riders.

I'm not sure how it works, but the scheduled court day they provided me is Jan 30, 2019. I won't be available at that time as I will be in Canada so I am not sure whether I can defer it so that I can present to court. Either way, I accept it was my mistake, so most likely will plead no contest. There's little chance I will have my interview before the scheduled court day.

I did speak with my lawyer, who provided me with reassurance that "this is no big deal" and to bring the ticket to the consulate "if I wish". I plan to though.

Why do you have to go to court to pay a ticket?

Have you ever gotten a traffic ticket before in your life?

Take the ticket, don't worry about it.  It won't show up on a police report either.

No idea. In my ticket, it just says you are scheduled to come to court on January 30, 2020. The police wrote it in. To be honest, I didn't even see that until later when I got home.

Nope. Been in two accidents, but never at fault and never led to any tickets. I'm the person that people honk to keep me in the right-most lane and keep 6 car lengths ahead of me.

I got distracted by my blind spot and with an unfamiliar route, I ended up crossing the double lines to get on the ramp.

I'm sure they're not concerned about a traffic ticket or everyone who has had a minor speeding ticket or rolling stop would have to consider themselves a criminal.

I believe that in the instruction for the form, it explains that list all the crimes "besides" traffic tickets or something along those lines.

During my security clearance for work, on the forms it also said to put all the convictions and crimes, but not to put traffic violations.

I wouldn't worry at all for a traffic ticket.

Usually you call the courthouse and arrange to pay - no court.  Hence the question.

Most Canadian traffic tickets get you to go down to city/town hall and pay them.  Well that's how it works in BC or Alberta anyhow.
