ARE YOU KIDDING ME?!

Applied for child passport along with mine as my child was under 18 when I naturalized recently. I got my passport a few days back. I just got a letter that the Dept of State wants proof that my child is actually my child as her birth certificate was issued more than a year after her birth (the country I came from only routinely issued short form, no parent names, at birth so we only got the long form for visa purposes later). This is despite the fact that she got her immigrant visa/green card as my child /derivative in the first place! Why is the embassy determination now not good enough? No we didn’t keep insurance records etc from more than a decade ago in a different country etc so it looks like we have to get a freaking DNA test done. I’m livid.

Sorry about the news. I guess if you have minor kids, stress is not over until you receive their US passports!

1) Can you call them up first and talk to a supervisor and talk about the country reciprocity on evidence? Do you have to provide a certified copy of the birth certificate?

2) Or send a cover letter with a detailed printout of the 1) country reciprocity with the US regarding birth certificates  and 2) home country official website descriptions on birth certificates and birth registrations.

Oh wow. The world of bureaucracy knows no limits to try a person's nerves.

1. Do you know how to get hold of a supervisor at the passport agency? I would at least like to point out that she got her green card on the basis of being my daughter so the Dept of State...somewhere.... has actually already accepted that as fact.

2. The problem is that they need the long form birth certificate to prove parentage, and this was not routinely issued in my country at birth (just the short form which does not list parent names, so it's not good enough for this) - so we only got the long form a few years after birth for visa purposes. We did provide an original long form certificate as requested, but the fact that it was issued more than a year after birth is the flag for them, despite it not being a high fraud country.

I just assume you can call that 877-487-2778 phone call that you see on the website for US Passports...

Another suggestion... maybe you can ask your congressman or senator for help.

I asked on a home country forum, and they said this is something that actually comes up commonly on our home country Facebook pages (which I tend to avoid) and they invariably end up having to do it.. . I could try the congressperson route but I’m inclined to take the path of least resistance/fastest path right now, annoying as it is.

It is standard protocol.
