Hello Everyone,

My husband and I were Married on March 30th, applied for the SS Card on April 10th. When we went in they found out that the POE at JFK had misspelled my husband's name, and that this would hold up his card, it would be six to eight weeks we were told. It's now been longer than that, and when he talked to the SS office they said they were still waiting on his status with immigration.

We are in NY, can anyone tell from their experience if this is normal?

Thanks!

Are you waiting on his Adjustment of Status to Permanent Resident? That might be what the hold up is. After we got married I was told I had to wait until my status was adjusted before I was able to have my name changed on my SSN.

I went back today to have it done and was told they did not have the status change showing in their system even though I had my GC right there. She proceeded to tell me that I might not get my new SSN for another 6-8 weeks. Said something about they are a bit behind.

Maybe someone else will jump on here and have a better answer for you. Best of luck.

When an alien requests an SSN or replacement/corrected SSN card, SSA will verify his or her immigration document/current status with the appropriate Bureau of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS). If the initial verification is not available through the Systematic Alien Verification for Entitlements (SAVE) system, SSA may need to send Form G-845 for manual verification.

Note: If the applicant has changed his/her name after an immigration document, i.e. I-94, was issued, e.g., married and is now using the married name, but has not obtained a corrected immigration document showing the new name; this is not a name discrepancy for enumeration purposes, i.e. SAVE clearance, if the applicant can provide an acceptable legal name change document to establish the new name.

SSA will not assign an SSN or issue a card to an individual that is within 14 days of his or her alien status expiring. Until the 76th day after entry an individual with K-1 status only needs to provide an unexpired I-94 showing current K-1 status to establish employment authorized status for SSN purposes.

The 14 day status expiration limit for assigning an SSN and/or issuing a card applies even if an individual submitted his or her application before being within the 14 day period and entered the 14 day period while waiting for his or her status to be verified.

Note: For applications submitted after 01/06/2007 SSA offices can submit an secondary electronic verification request, that in most cases eliminates the need for a Form G-845 to be sent. However, in some cases DHS will request to see copies of the immigration document as a response to the secondary electronic verification request and the document copies will be sent along with Form G-845 for manual verification.

If your status does not verify through the initial SAVE request, be sure that the secondary request has been made and return to the SSA office no more than once a week to see if the SSA office has received a response from the secondary verification request. If the G-845 is sent, give it 2 weeks and start checking at the office once a week.

Be sure to take your documents whenever going into the SSA office.

Same thing happened to my friend. Husband tried to get his social security card, but got a letter from the social security office that his last name is misspelled.

Have you done anything so far?

I guess that my friend should go back to the SS office and show other documents with the right spelled.

Can someone give me more ideas?
