Can I buy my flight ticket before the k1 Visa interview?

I bought mine because I really wanted to be in the USA for Christmas and I risked a super short gap between interview and flight: Interview was Dec 5th and my flight was Dec 15th.

I made it but I think I aged ten years in those ten days worrying that the passport would not make it back to me in time!

I think I got my passport back about three days before my flight!

it is certainly a risk. you need to have your visa and passport physically in hand before you go and even if you are confident you are going to receive approval you cannot be sure of when your visa/passport arrives. This happened with my fiancé and I am glad we did not rush and buy the ticket before hand just to be cautious. We were confident he would get approved, which he did, and I certainly was ready for him to come like a week or two after and we were ready to purchase the ticket but his visa took longer than he had expected to be returned to him. Not sure how much cheaper it would be for you, but if you really want to I would just advise to be sure you are aware of cancellation/refund policy or the policy on changing the dates on your ticket.

Yeah, I'm worried about it... I'll have a huge GAP between the interview and the day I wanna go... Like a month... Maybe I'll take a risk and hope for the best... Thanks for sharing your experience :)

Oh ok. well a month seems like a good time. I can't remember exactly how much time it took for him to get it back but you know as a couple who never did this before I definitely thought it would be right away lol. Also, my husband's embassy is not in his original country...he had to travel to Barbados and they had to send the visa back. That also might have caused delay we were not expecting. But a month certainly is a huge gap. Just make sure you have a good cancellation or change policy and you should be good if you're willing to take the risk. Good luck!

Yeah, my consulate is next to home, it suppose to be here in a few days... I'll track the flights and if I find a really good deal, I'll take the risk hhahahahahaha

Thank you!

I think it's all about personal preference on risk - the flights are pretty pricey. We bought flights back before my fiance's interview knowing there was a risk of around $400 to change it if things didn't go according to plan and we made our flights 2.5 weeks post the interview in case something minor happened (which actually did happen because they lost his photos for the Visa and we had to go drop off new ones, which actually benefitted us on getting his Visa the same day of dropping off the new photos instead of waiting until the end of the week, but it could have worked the opposite way too and created a delay).

One thing to note though (I don't know if you got your Packet 3 and if it is the same in Brazil) - is that my fiance had to sign the form when the Packet was complete and it does indicate in big, bold red text:

" I have in my possession and I am prepared to submit all the documents listed

above that apply to my case. I fully realize that no advance assurance can be

given to me as to when or whether a visa will actually be issued and I also

understand that I should NOT give up my job, dispose of property, or make

any final travel arrangements until a visa is actually issued to me. "

We were asked in the document review (right before the interview) if we had made any travel arrangements. My fiance answered honestly - as always recommended - that he did have flights booked. The lady checking over his documents asked when the date of travel was (again, answered honestly), but also informed her that if needed, the date was tentative and we could change the flights by rebooking with the airline.

Just another thing to keep in mind if you do book beforehand :)

Please don't do that!! Our interview was rescheduled 3 times over the course of 3 months before finally having it. Even after our interview extra things were needed because they waited so long to schedule our interview. Like everyone else, it is best for you to just wait until you have that visa. Grant it, these are different embassies but anything can happen.

My wife's friend had no issue with the interview at all and no additional documents requested. That was over 2 months ago - she's still waiting for the visa to be issued.

Maybe just wait and buy a round trip ticket since they are less expensive ? I don't know if other people do that but it seems to make more sense than risking something going wrong..

A few years back someone had a setback with their passport delivery because the correios truck was intercepted by criminals.

he had to get a new passport and work with the embassy to have another sealed envelope set up

can you do it? It’s really up to you. Should you? Not really.

what’s the rush anyway?
