My wife just applied for a green card after getting her CR-1 Visa. She is about to get a checking account with a major U.S, bank. Assuming she receives her green card within  a week or 10 days, she will then be able to apply for a SS card and begin work. Looking at the credit card application, they want her SS#, her annual income(the amount she puts down or thru a statement from her employer?) and the source of that income. Is  my reading of the  above  correct?

yes but it is unlikely she get a card on her own very quickly.

The best way to help her build credit will be to add her on your credit accounts and to get her a secured card. After time, her own credit report will start to build and she will be able to qualify for cards on her own.

My husband got his EAD and SS # in june i think, and just now qualified for a very low limit unsecured card on his own. It takes time.

Does it make a difference if I have the same credit card that she would be applying for? I have had that card for 6+ years and have the highest credit rating you can have?

If she has no SSN or income, she will not get a credit card.

You could try adding her to yours.  That is what we did.

no. that is based on YOUR credit, not HERS. She has none. She has to start from scratch.

as mentioned, add her as an authorized user on your credit accounts. Get her a secured credit card. Keep utilization to below 30%. Make payments on time. And Wait.

I would suggest meeting with your relationship manager at your bank and explaining your situation. I sat down with mine and got approved for a credit card right away (albeit only $500) and I do not have a SSN, work permit etc yet.

Once you get your SSN your bank can then link your usage of the credit card to it.
