Hello all, New to the forum.  My wife has the 10yr permanent resident card.  That card is set to expire in January 2020.  We have a trip planned for February 2020.  We started the green card renewal process 2 weeks ago.  The renewal will not be completed in time before our planned trip.   I've read that she will still be able to travel, but am unsure what documents are needed.   I-551, I-131A or what docs are needed for her to travel along with her expired green card?  So much conflicting information on the internet.  Thank you

Once you have the I797 receipt for the card renewal in hand, make an appt with the USCIS field office and get an I551 stamp in her passport

Agreed - get the I-551 stamp. You will need to call to make the appointment.

Since filing we have received two I-797C notices.   One is a receipt for the $540 paid, the other is for the biometrics appointment.   Is that the same I797 you mentioned?

Yes. Use the one for the receipt

We called for a infopass appointment.  She was told that the she would be able to get the stamp at her biometrics appointment.

Today we had the biometrics appointment.  However the passport was not stamped, instead she got a sticker placed on her resident card.  The sticker extends the expiration date of the card for 1 year.

So not sure if that's what we really needed?  Thought it was a stamp on the passport, not a sticker on the green card?

The sticker says "The validity of this card is extended through the month and yeard indicated"  marked DEC 2020.

This works as well. It's not the stamp, but functions similarly.
