The north of England is a bit of a mixed bag. On the one hand places like Manchester have been undergoing something of a revival in recent years. Manchester in particular has taken over from Birmingham as England's second city and its urban regeneration plan that followed the commonwealth games has turned around much of the city centre. Then again there's places like Coventry, York and Leicester that are pretty deprived.

Almost went to uni in Coventry. That place hasn't been right since it was rebuilt after WW2,

Scottish traditions aside (my mother’s side of the family is actually Scottish) Haggis is disgusting. I was mortified to discover you can actually buy canned haggis – a friend of mine used to buy it and boil it on his stove. Smells like someone cooking garbage.

I'm not sure I understand the devolution arguments from anything other than a nationalistic standpoint. There's obviously a long history to the issue - but Scotland hasn't been a truly independent nation in 300 years.

Granted the English government hasn't governed Scotland particularly effectively - but I do wonder if Scotland could stand on its own, economically speaking.

Add me to the list of people who have visited Scotland and like it very much.

And I was there in January, about 14 years ago! I loved Edinburgh, it's very walkable. I have fond memories of a place called Seeds (wonderful vegetarian soups and homemade bread). Arthur's Seat, a hill in the middle of the city. Went to the countryside a bit, too.

Anyway, cannot comment on the political/economic issues but just wanted to say, it's a gorgeous place!

York is hardly in the same league as Coventry or Leicester, but it's no picnic either.

Actually, I'd love to visit Scotland despite the reputation for rain, rain, rain. I love mountains and the Highlands would be a great place to go hiking, assuming you get a nice day.

Scotland is a great country! We will never know if it can survive on it's own if they never make it an independant country. It may do good, or may do bad, but if this is what the Scottish people want, give them a chance I say. Yes, the weather is miserable, there are drug addicts, alcoholics, homeless people, a high risk of heart disease. But, I don't see it any more so than any other country. In fact, other countries are a lot worse. I'm proud to be Scottish, and always will be.
