NPR's Ailsa Chang talks with Carrie DeCell, one of the lawyers on Doc Society v. Pompeo, a legal challenge to rules that want all visa applicants to register their social media with the government.

AILSA CHANG, HOST:

As of this year, visa applicants who want to come to the U.S. have to disclose how they identify themselves on social media. According to a new lawsuit, that can be a big problem for people from countries with authoritarian regimes or who conduct research that may put their lives in danger.

Carrie DeCell is one of the lawyers representing the plaintiffs. When she joined us to talk about the lawsuit, I asked her to tell me a little more about the groups suing the Trump administration.

Upshot, we need to protect our FB/IG/T privacy. Don’t these filmmakers know that social media platforms are under no obligation to protect anyone’s privacy.

Not only are they under no obligation to protect privacy, many of them actively share information about you with anyone who is willing to pay for it.

I like the Yang proposal that your data belongs to you and these companies bid for access. You get to choose what you share and how it can be used. He represented that it could be a windfall for some folks who don't mind sharing.

Interesting concept, over Facebook's dead body.
