I am an american citizen. My husband came here on a work visa about 4 years ago before we met. We got married this year and i want to do his papers to become a U.S. citizen. Where do i even start? I know nothing at all about this.

You can start Here

he won’t become a citizen though he will become a Green Card holder.
he can apply for citizenship when you have been married 3 years and he also has been a Green Card holder for 3 years.

Which visa is he currently on?

Has to have a green card to work so the following

A green card authorizes an individual to live and work in the United States permanently. A green card is valid for ten years and must be renewed subsequently. A green card holder can apply for U.S. citizenship after five years as a lawful permanent resident.

He has many years to go before citizenship.   Some steps in between first

None. His expired and he never renewed it.

Is he still working for a company ? If he came on work permit he must be either on H1b or L1 . As long his work permit is valid even with expired visa you can file i-130 to start the process

H1b or L seem unlikely, why did you pick on those 2?

That's why we're here to help. Best way to find out what visa he came on is to look in his passport. It should have a stamp in there. Please report back and we'll be able to guide you.

It sats R H2A?
