If you never received an A-number from a previous US visa then you leave it blank. A-numbers aren't assigned to those with tourist visas so if you haven't had anything but (if even) a tourist visa then don't worry about that part and leave blank. My husband did not have an A-number when we petitioned since he has never previously been to the US as anything other than a tourist, but USCIS assigned him an A-number when our I130 petition was approved.

Our CR1 Journey:

USCIS Stage:

  • Feb 14 2019: NOA1 (NSC)
  • July 31 2019: I129f NOA1
  • Sep 19 2019: I129f NOA2 (Denied - 50 days from NOA1)
  • Sep 19 2019: I130 NOA2 (Approved - 217 days from NOA1)

NVC Stage:

  • Sep 27 2019: Sent to Department of State
  • Oct 31 2019: Case number received (34 days since sent)
  • Nov 1 2019: IV & AOS fees received & paid
  • Nov 14 2019: IV & AOS submitted
  • Dec 18 2019: All docs accepted, but one additional doc requested (5 weeks from submission)
  • Dec 18 2019: Requested doc submitted
  • Feb 19 2020: Documentarily Qualified (9 weeks from 2nd submission, 14 weeks from first submission)

Interview Stage:

  • Mar 11 2020: Interview letter received
  • Apr 1 2020: Interview date
  • Mar 17 2020: Interview cancelled due to COVID-19
  • August 3 2020: Rescheduled letter received, new appointment August 25 2020
  • August 25 2020: Visa approved at interview! (558 days from NOA1)
  • September 10 2020: Embassy received passport in mail
  • September 15 2020: Passport with visa in hand

Where do I find an A-Number or is it assigned during the application process

Check your NOA1 from USCIS by the beneficiary's name, many times it is there.   Otherwise it will be on the visa

it should be on the NOA1 you received after the petition was filed. If you were never previously issued a visa, you do not have one yet and you leave it blank.

Well I'll be...  There it is...  But if we filed for a fiance visa and she got the number then, a few years ago, then why would we want to use it again to give them clear access to why she was denied before.  They claimed at the time a non bona fide relationship.  After 7 years of marriage I would say we are definitely bona fide.

Better you put it there. They will find out about it one way or the other. So don’t get an RFE for something that simple

If you have one, you have to include it.

The instructions do not say it is optional.

Reluctanly it will be added.  Thanks all of you for your help and encouragement to do what is right.

They would connect the two petitions anyway --  remember the fingerprints that were taken?  So, adding the number will not reveal anything they don't already have access to.  It will just help perhaps make the connection earlier in the process and dealt with then, rather than Iater when it would raise questions about why you didn't acknowedge it or appeared to try to conceal it.
