Don't feel bad, I didn't recognize it either.

Then again, I'm from the deep South, where education cannot penetrate hickism...

Also, I am familiar with Craigslist.  Have bought and sold things there.  But what is Casual Encounters??

Casual Encounters is no more. It was a place for people to meet for what it said -- casual encounters, i.e., hookups. I am familiar with it only from a friend of mine who has zero interest in having a relationship but plenty of interest in having sex. She doesn't "do" the bar or club scene, and it was a way to meet people at first through emails. She was looking for a particular type (brainy, wordy, dark-haired, 30-35, works in a STEM-related discipline, not living at home with mom and dad unless acting as a caregiver) and she could weed out some of the guys that way through correspondence. Of course she got a LOT of unsolicited "member" pics.  I always thought it was a bit weird, like why don't you just go on OKCupid or whatever and say you're looking for something casual, but she said it was if anything worse on there. Now without CE, she has resorted to picking up guys at the grocery store. 🙄

Now the lightbulb is coming on.  I get it.  Now we know how you met Alex.

That IS funny. I did kind of just describe him, and now I'm wondering if I should keep him away from my friend -- he's her type!

Actually I met Alex the old-fashioned way: behind a sofa at a party. I was on the sofa and when I peered over the back of it there he was, reading a magazine.

Ha, I don't know what the article was! It was a Sunday (London) Times magazine, that I remember. He told me had found it under the sofa (hideous beige) and was reading it because it was there, and he was bored (2005, no smartphone ). I was sitting alone on the sofa and I felt it edge forward a little at some point, which seemed weird, and when I looked over, there he was. I asked him if he usually read behind couches at parties, and he said no, he was hiding from his ex-girlfriend who didn't understand why he had broken up with her, and he had managed to wedge himself back there because she was unlikely to look there. (He was correct.) So I joined him and we shared some of the whisky from his flask while he told me gossip about everyone at the party. I thought he was fantastic immediately, but we didn't manage to get together for another 6 months (though we eventually broke up). I also met Voldemort-the-ex that night so it was rather an eventful evening!

His eyes are brown, since you did ask.

Well done!
