An appropriate reaction is criticizing them, even suggesting they clarify their position in contrast to the professor's? There's a near infinite amount of ways, including not even bothering to contact their employer, maybe writing Turley a letter himself, because there was nothing that happened that necessitated contacting this person's employer. He was not speaking on behalf of his employer.

It's one thing to joke about it in the offhand, but if I actually called your employer and suggested they fire you, following your political posts here, you wouldn't be okay with that, wouldn't be playing this down as "a strongly worded email", you'd rightfully consider it coercive, malicious, and threatening. It doesn't need to be physically "violent" to be a threat, it's intimidating someone, behaving in a threatening (harmful) manner, it's making them fearful of doing something perfectly normal which is expressing political views. Trying to ruin someone's life because they disagree with your political views is insanely disproportionate, and just insane in general.

It's unfortunate, too, because people like Glenn Greenwald, Michael Tracey, very left wing journalists, who have my respect for their integrity, reflexively get likened to "Russian agents/assets" or "Putin puppets" every single time they criticize behavior from people they largely agree with politically.  The left need to take a look at how ridiculous they've been acting.

Do you think a letter to a prestigious school has any affect at all on this man's career? He is protected by tenure and seniority and is s nationally recognized legal brand.

Where is that tempest In a teapot meme that ban hammer had? That fits well here.

It does fit well here -> Tempest in a teapot: Writing a hysterical letter to someone's employer demanding they fire them because one disagrees with them on impeachment.

mfw irrationality is so normal you think criticizing irrationality is a hysterical act

Well, we disagree on this, as I said before. And that is okay. :) Life would be boring if we all got along all the time.

I grew up in the valley and city (sf), I'm used to two distinct (contrasting) sides and arguing with everyone, so it comes naturally for me.

Fair enough! I'm from Burbank originally and I'm now moving to Santa Monica next month. Not crazy about it (I was SO done with living anywhere near LA) but I had a choice of staying here in Berkeley or following my fiance, and I chose to be with him after some major reflection. I try to be pretty open-minded about things, though I know where my prejudices are. But I am always happy to listen, even if I know I probably won't agree. I don't take many things personally, even if it takes me a little while to understand why I might be acting emotionally to something. Thrashing things out is good for us all, I think, as people and as Americans.

No what I think is getting wrapped around the axle over a letter to staff is hilarious. Are you going to take up the cause of every volleyball coach and calculus adjunct at GW University?

Seems like yesterday cancer culture was busy cancering one of their own, with equally disproportionate and comically tantrum-like reaction to another nothingburger, which sounds awful familiar.

Weinstein said he's been aware of the tradition for some time, and never objected to it. But this year, organizers said that on the Day of Absence, they wanted white people to stay off campus. Weinstein opposed this shift, and he posted a message on a campus email list in which he objected to the proposal to ask white people to stay off campus.

"There is a huge difference between a group or coalition deciding to voluntarily absent themselves from a shared space in order to highlight their vital and underappreciated roles (the theme of the Douglas Turner Ward play Day of Absence, as well as the recent Women's Day walkout), and a group encouraging another group to go away," Weinstein wrote. "The first is a forceful call to consciousness, which is, of course, crippling to the logic of oppression. The second is a show of force, and an act of oppression in and of itself."

Weinstein went on to say he would be on campus on the Day of Absence and would encourage a similar stance by white people being asked to stay away. People should "put phenotype aside," he said. "On a college campus, one's right to speak -- or to be -- must never be based on skin color."

That email is one of the reasons Weinstein is being called racist, with students saying his tone belittled the people behind the idea of having a Day of Absence without white people on campus. The other reason cited against Weinstein is that he has come out against a recommendation on faculty hiring by the college's Equity and Inclusion Council. That recommendation, currently under consideration by college leaders, would require an "equity justification/explanation" for all faculty hires.

In an interview, Weinstein said he believes that there are many things colleges can and should do to attract diverse candidates for faculty jobs. But he said the proposal at Evergreen State "subordinates all other characteristics of applicants to one thing." He said that in the sciences, for example, the rationale for faculty positions is to teach science, not to promote equity or diversity. "The most important thing is that the person in front of the room knows something about the subject and has insight in teaching," he said.

Weinstein said he has been stunned to have been shouted at on campus, and to be told that he needs to leave campus because of two positions he took on policy issues.

Kind of like the Dems getting wrapped around the axle over a phone call?  It was interesting to see Speaker Pelosi get so worked up yesterday by a simple question.  It has been my experience that when someone gets that worked up over such a simple question it hits very close to home.

Not that *I* would know anything more about it than from Best of Craigslist. https://www.craigslist.org/about/best/all/cas/

When I need a bit of cheering up, I read some of those. They never fail to make me laugh.

I've been able to keep a lot of pictures, music, movies, etc. passed from hard drives like 20 years ago, one of the few casualties of repeated data migration was some funny ads I'd screenshot from Craigslist when living in the Bay Area, people would have the craziest way of selling stuff, was awesome.

Don't feel bad, I didn't recognize it either.

Then again, I'm from the deep South, where education cannot penetrate hickism...

Also, I am familiar with Craigslist.  Have bought and sold things there.  But what is Casual Encounters??
