Hello All

I am getting married on June 29 to my USC fiancee and then we are both moving to Baltimore, MD at the end of July (from Seattle). So I just learned of the fee increases and this is throwing a kink in our plans, as originally I was planning on getting to Baltimore by Aug 15 and then applying. But with the costs tripling (and I have no need for EAD or Advance Parole as I am on an H1-B so my filing costs are going up from around 500 to almost 1500), I am trying to see if there are any other alternatives. So I have come up with some ideas, but no idea if they work or not.

1) I can file my application at the Chicago mailbox by July 25th, and use a friends address in Baltimore, MD that I will be staying with for a couple of days, and then on Aug 1 (when my new apartment is ready to move in) try to change address to my apartment. So this way I beat the filing deadline, but also continue to stay within the same district office.

2) Is there any way to use a work address as a mailing address and list our correct home address on the G-325A's? Or does this not make sense? We will have a business mailing address in Baltimore that will be active by July 15, so I wanted to see if this was an option.

3) I can still try to file by July 28th or so at Chicago but list my actual address in Baltimore. However, I wont be able to receive mail at this address in Baltimore till August 1. But is there a real risk I might receive something from USCIS in that short a time? How crucial is it if I miss the very fist piece of mail from USCIS? I mean I am listing my address about 5 days before I actually move in, but only about 3 days before USCIS is likely to mail anything out.

ANy thoughts on what is the best option? I may just bite the bullet in the end and file on Aug 15 and pay the extra costs, but I didnt want to dismiss these right away. Any thoughts?

Thanks in advance

I suggest obtaining a personal mail box from a place like the UPS Store or Pak N' Mail etc. If you won't be in Baltimore to do it in advance, you may be able to arrange it locally.

USCIS is notorious for ignoring requests for change of address, then sending you mail at the wrong address that gets returned. Then they note your file as a no show and issue a deportation order. I'll be moving shortly after I file AOS in July as well. I'll either use my daughter's address or get a PMB near my new home. There's no way I'm changing addresses between filing and green card.

Facts are cheap...knowing how to use them is precious...

Don't get a P.O. Box!! USCIS won't deliver to them!!

I think you should use your August address. The soonest you'd receive a piece of mail is about 7 days after they receive your package!

Thank you all for your reply. I appreciate the help. However, I was also curious about option 1 where I use a friend's address for a few weeks. That way even if USCIS does not manage to change my address on file I will still continue to get the mail. This is just in the eventuality that I am unable to move into my apartment right away (which people in baltimore have warned me is a possibility owing to vacancy rates). What are the consequences in using a different mailing address? I plan to file the change of address (AR-11), the sponsors change of address, and also call and hound USCIS about it, so at the time of the interview I can demonstrate that I tried to change my address with them in good faith.

Thanks for your help

It's a risk to do that, because there's a high likelihood that even though you file the change of address form, USCIS will still send crucial notices and communication to the old address. If it is marked undeliverable at any point, it can significantly delay your case. It's a headache that I personally would try to avoid at all costs. It's up to you though.

Hi There

But if any of those get sent to my friends address she can hand them to us right? After all on the I-485 form it allows for a C/O option does it not? So I dont see mail getting lost as a big possibility in this issue. I guess my big question for this case is, is it OK to use a mailing address on the I-485 that is not my actual residential address for more than a week? Like I said I will use this as a last reort in case I cannot move into my apartment by Aug 1 but have to wait till Aug 15.

Like I said, it's ultimately up to you and what you feel is right, but I am simply letting you know what COULD happen. I am sure that your friend could hand you the mail. The thing to be concerned about is that if the mail carrier knows that the person the mail is addressed to doesn't live there, they will NOT deliver it and will send it back. This is particularly the case with mail from the Federal Government.

I have been on here since March (not that long at all!) and I have seen so many people have complications with their case due to address changes, etc. I just want to let you know where the problems could arise. It's just my personal opinion- I'd rather do the simplest thing and be able to sleep soundly at night. Everyone has a different tolerance for risk.

Keep in mind that sending in C/O your friends name at your friends address should eliminate any confusion with the usps delivery person. also i attached a letter to the front of each petition spelling out the mailing address is different than the domicile address and explained the reason. if for no other reason as evidence that i had brought this to their attention, if there were to be a problem in the future with mailings. Various ways to handle any concern i suppose. this is just mine.Best of luck, jerry
