Hi all,

I am getting ready to fill the N-400 form and as I was starting to fill the form online on the USCIS online platform, it would not let me go further because in the past, I had time gaps in my addresses because twice, at the end of our lease, my husband and I went traveling for a few months (three months once, four months another time) and had no address in the US during that time, even though we signed leases every time we came back (currently on the same lease since February 2017 with no plan of ending it). The online form won't allow me to fill up my past addresses with time gaps in between...Anybody had the same problem? suggestions?

Thank you!

You shouldn’t have any time gaps in the address history. It’s asking for any location you lived in last 5 years, not just from US.

You don’t have an address when you are traveling, if you have not maintained a permanent home address during that time. I had a year with no address at one point for that reason.

OP, does it not allow you to just put “traveling”? I would be inclined to just fill it on paper if this is an issue with online filing.

Thanks Susie, no, that's the thing, one of the next steps is to actually list all of your trips abroad, but it is two independent parts...I am thinking of filing on paper, it was just so convenient, but I may just go with the old good way!

I think you still have to put the city, province, zip code and country while you're outside the US. Do you at least remember the name of all the accommodations? you can probably just put 'Residence#1' etc for street name and address of foreign address and have the countries reflected on your international trips.

Paper applic might be better so that you can also explain if  you can't remember all the addresses of your accommodations.

i think you can still file online if you prefer that way in two ways.

1. Use the overseas address during those time frames

2. Did you change the address with USCIS or with banks or in state ID or driver licenses or any insurance policies or such when you travelled for few months those two times? If you kept your same address everywhere during those times, you maintained that residence during that time, simply not paid for it. In that case you can use that address for those two times.

Thanks,  it actually doesn't recognize non-US addresses for that specific part of the form, online anyways and unfortunately, we had absolutely nothing in the US during the time we traveled that can support a proof of address.

I did read on the USCIS website that "Resided continuously in the U.S. for three years in the case of qualified spouses of U.S. citizens" which is my case so since we signed our current lease on February 1, 2017, i think I am just going to wait for a few months to start the application!

your travels were before Feb2017? I totally missed that. You can already apply for N-400 if based on 3-yr marriage.

Yes, we were out of the country from March to June 2015 and then September to December 2016 (with 2 short r/t back to the US within that time period). We have been married since 2013. But it does say you have to have "resided continuously in the US for 3 years" and as of today, it is almost three years, but not quite since it is officially since February 1 2017 we have an actual address again.

Early filing is Feb 1, 2020  minus 90 days. You're already within 90 days. You can apply now.

When is your 5th yr GC anniversary? You certainly met the N-400 requirement of continous residence if based on marriage. Your trips are less than 6 months each so you didn't break that requirement starting from when you got your GC. You just need to write down your foreign addresses and International trips. Use paper applic if it's easier. you can always explain at the interview.

You mean Part 9 Time Outside the United States? Yes, for the 19 and 21 days trips. When you apply online and write down the dates you left and returned to the US, the total days outside the US for each trip will be automatically calculated. For the 2 day trip -- if you mean that you were there in canada for 2 whole days -- then yes, include that too. Even if it's only one whole day, include that too.
