You can not get Medicare or some other benefits if you are not a citizen

Permanent Residents get conditional Medicare (the state will pay for the Medicare premium, just to get them off Medicaid) as long as they stay longer than the 5 years mark.

No SSI.

Compared to the other paperwork, the ROM is by far the easiest. We just sent ours in last week and we got a text this morning saying it’s in process.

That's  correct everything done in four copies but easy peasy!

Trust me I hear it being the only white guy in the office. They like to joust and joke with me about it as you know former soldiers do with issues like that.

I am sorry...…… I am a former Corporal here (Marine Corps) now working on a Army base around former soldiers and a couple airmen. I am the only Marine in the building so I hear a lot of jokes

Sempter Fi!

Good Morning,

Are there any benefits or drawbacks to doing/not doing ROM?  Is obtaining dual citizenship for the Philippine spouse desirable? We are considering moving to the Philippines after my retirement in four years and want to explore our options.  I also want to leave her in the best possible situation when I go the the great VJ in the sky).

Thanks,

B.

Does she want a blue passport?

YMMV

Drawbacks ... can't get Philippine passport is in her married name.    If you plan to live in the Philippines I would expect you (she) will own a piece of dirt, y'all would want that in her married name and with your name on the deed as well.       Not a ton of perks for ROM on its own, but lots of stuff connects up with ROM.

Dual citizenship; if living in the Philippines the obvious one is owning land, former Filipinos are limited to how much land they can own, thus a plus for dual citizenship.  Owning a business.  Voting.  Running for public office.  Opening bank accounts.

USC ... most obvious is no limitation on how long a person can be out of the USA.   Opening a USD bank account (if you will be living in the Phils there will be times that it is better transfering dollars instead of PHP).

There is stuff with SSA as well but I don't have the info handy.   Do make sure your wife knows when she reaches "age" she can draw SS off of your account, even if she never worked.

She is ambivalent but it is still "early days." I definitely think it would be best down the line.

Finally done...

Yes I know about that feeling ...   in time.

Once citizenship time arrived my wife was very excited to get her blue passport.   Then she completed her dual citizenship.
