Good Morning,

Are there any benefits or drawbacks to doing/not doing ROM?  Is obtaining dual citizenship for the Philippine spouse desirable? We are considering moving to the Philippines after my retirement in four years and want to explore our options.  I also want to leave her in the best possible situation when I go the the great VJ in the sky).

Thanks,

B.

Not totally familiar with ROM, but if the plan is to move to the PI eventually, I would think it would be desirable.

The only drawback to not doing the  ROM is that the Filipina will not  be able to get a Filipino passport in her married  name. If you are moving  there  I would think you would want the ROM done.  It's a painless process took us only 3 weeks. We think similar  Boris.  After the great VJ in the sky dual citizenship  would be most beneficial. You can not get Medicare or some other benefits if you are not a citizen. I'm not sure though but I did read that somewhere.  Do your research.

If you plan on retiring in the Philippines then it is a good thing to do. It does give you some benefits with the government that are not offered to regular expats.

@boris64

Also dude your marriage will not be recognized insofar as PSA in the Philippines. Plus  air travel she would have to buy her ticket in her maiden name and or carry around the marriage license all the time.

Compared to the other paperwork, the ROM is by far the easiest. We just sent ours in last week and we got a text this morning saying it’s in process.

Lol, trust me I understand and apologize. But it's a good thing you aren't in that group. It's a group primarily for Filipinas to supposedly help with Immigration.

Trust me I hear it being the only white guy in the office. They like to joust and joke with me about it as you know former soldiers do with issues like that.

I am sorry...…… I am a former Corporal here (Marine Corps) now working on a Army base around former soldiers and a couple airmen. I am the only Marine in the building so I hear a lot of jokes
