Hi all,

I wanted to put my friend's experience as I got her permission. She is not a member here and she is not the type to follow forums especially as she is not trying to immigrate but as she knew I was a member she wanted to share her finally happy visa story.

My friend got married to her now husband right before my move to US on K1, and wanted to apply for a tourist visa to meet his family and to come to my wedding, she was suppose to be my maid of honor.

She is a foreign national living ( working) in Japan longer than 5 years, husband is a contractor for the military for the past 15 years.

She got rejected based on 214b, which we slightly expected, but the reason they gave was husband's contract not showing the end date as updated. they got the contract updated and apply again within the month, got rejected again and this was expected too. This happened in 2018, what the embassy told was things were harder at that moment due to political environment ( this was told to the husband who called embassy to ask why). I also lived in Japan for years as foreign national (same country) and got my tourist visa 2011 with ease. So what we thought as affect : 1) Us citizen husband - they also mentioned marriage being too new, as it was about 6 months ago, 2) political environment.

A year later in 2019, she decided to try again with all the updated documents, we did nothing different but telling her to just explain whatever is asked calmly. However, she had 1) updated renewed Japanese residency card - so she applied right after her card was renewed 2) updated contract for husband 3) we studied the dates so she can remember more clearly - such as when the husband first came to Japan. She thinks she was lucky to get the interviewer she got, and that the interviewer was extremely surprised she got refused before. She said this interviewer looked older and more experienced.

A thing she noted was that the interviewer who refused her the second time was there, and the current interviewer went to back to talk to him ( you can actually see this in the embassy in Tokyo because it is all glass. She said the current interviewer asked why he refused this visa as the wife and husband was already living in the country for years and they both had letters of travel/ back to duty and their contracts; and she recalls the other interviewer asking in a weird tone if she was going to get approved.

The second CO most likely refused without looking at anything but to just not to disapprove the very first CO's decision, which is again pretty common.

Overall she did get her 10 year m entry tourist visa and had her first travel which she was so anxious about at the time. We also learnt they are having a baby and now actually thinking to come here to be close to me and his family, which she will follow the route necessary for it when the time comes.

In many countries you cannot change a tourist visa to another visa without leaving the country at least once, and to be honest this is something I wish was done in USA. I am sure there are way more issues lying around but still.

The only thing CO told my friend was to remember this is not a visa to immigrate, that her husband may want to go back one day and that she was to get the proper visa. She said it is sad that they need to even tell this to people but it is what it is. She was simply joking with the amount she paid she could have been halfway getting a Green Card lol.
