Hello all,

My wife now has her green card.  We got her SSN before the green card, a couple of months after her arrival on the K1. She seems to think we need to get a new SSN card made since she received hers before the green card. Her card says something about only being valid for employment with DHS approval. Is she correct, that she needs a new card?

Also, her 6 year old son received his green card and she wants him to get a SSN. Originally, I was under the impression that he first needs the EAD to receive a SSN (which we have still not received).  Does he still need the EAD even though he has the green card?

Thank you in advance.

If she wants a new card without the “DHS wording” she can get one. Just bring the green card and passport to Social Security office to apply for it. It’ll be the same number, just without the wording. But she doesn’t have to get it. The green card is both proof if employment authorization and ID. I never bothered to get a new one until I became a citizen.

She doesn't need a new card. It may be useful to reduce confusion in some cases, but it shouldn't be required.

It's a good idea to get a new card if you change your name (my wife had some problems with the CA DMV with her original SS card as Anastasia [maiden name] and an EAD card as Anastasia [my last name]), and some employers might not be clear on what the 'valid for work only with DHS authorization' text means (a GC is work authorization).

It's always a good idea to update your immigration status with SSA.

Agree with others.  You may save some time if you fill out the SS-5 forms before you head to your local SSA office, for both the change in immigration status for your wife and new SSN for your son.

You can fill in the SS-5 apps at home, print them, sign them at your local SSA office, don't forget your proper new documentation.

Good luck on your immigration journey.
