History movies for learning for civics test

There are some really good short videos (10-20 min) on Youtube. Just search for American History.

Dinesh D'Douza's "Death of a Nation"  was impressive for me.  Was not much in it that I didn't know, but there was only maybe one thing I disagreed with.  He also has other Documentaries out and books.  He was born in India, and immigrated with his parents to the US and is in love with the US.  Now, if you are a hard core leftest, you will have problems believing anything in it is the truth.  People do not want "Truth",  they want conformation that they are correct in their own beliefs of what is true.   If you go the book route, look for history books that are more than 40 years old, as written history changes and is written by the victor.

If you’re just looking to learn facts for the test, I heavily HEAVILY recommend against anything as propaganda-y as something by D’Souza. (I’d recommend against anything like that just generally, but that’s neither here nor there).

 

Someone mentioned free classes offered at a library, I used to lead crash course history lessons as well as taught English for N-400 applicants and I always tried to make it as interesting as possible. Even smaller cities will sometimes have programs like this available!

 

I would suggest using the movies as a tool to get more hyped/interested in what you are learning and maybe not as your main study tool. I’m a big nerd about this stuff though, so it’s easy for me to push the flash cards and think that’s interesting enough as it is.

 

Hamilton also isn’t really the BEST just on pure accuracy, but just TRY forgetting “1776... New York City” once those songs get stuck in your head...

Our local high school system’s adult education center offers free English and  civics etc lessons to those studying for the naturalization test. I’m sure many public school systems and libraries do similar.

For names and dates - and the stuff about the constitutional convention- it worked just fine  

 

i’m assuming you all know about the uscis app for learning the test stuff too, I had it on my phone and would just flip through it occasionally like if standing in line or something.  It gives you multiple choice answers but still definitely helps.

you do not need to know the history of the US

 

If they tried to test on our history / it would be way too much 

 

films only cover a small fraction of an event like one battle of a huge war

not the full history of the USA

OP, also just for your information, the vast vast majority of people pass the civics and history part with no problem. My father-in-law, who was 76 years old when he took the test last year, passed it with flying colors. He memorized all the answers. He knew the answers even before they finished asking it. He failed the "Understanding English" part by the way, lol, ended up had to go back a second time.

I’m lucky in that English is my home language so that part was never an issue. One thing on the English test I’ve noted from forums though, is that many people seem to be under the mistaken impression that the English test basically consists of the reading and writing of one sentence each. It’s not; those just test your ability to read and write English. The majority of the English test is conducted through the Q & A/conversation with the interviewing officer. So if you need to help prep someone for the test, don’t just focus on being able to write a dictated sentence!

They will ask 10 questions from the 100 questions listed on the PDF and you only have to get 6 right. If your first 6 answers are correct they wont ask further questions from the civic section.

What about books? I loved John Jakes historical books, but he does not go back to that era so much.

(TV show was unwatchable soap opera).

 

I was just looking for some context that would help me remember places or dates

Specifically about founding fathers.

The thing is that it is just memorizing, I wanted to have context, to really understand it, not just to memorize.
